A Couple Questions....

So firstly, I have never grown and I've only done research on the topic for the last year or so. From what i've read a 400w hps will be about right for my needs if its running in an optimal setup

1.would constructing a 4x4x7 grow cab be the best option for me if I plan on using a 400w hps light?

Now from what I understand, if plants are getting 50watts per square foot than that equates to 1g per square foot for an experienced grower. 2.Can that be done by utilizing the dimensions of the box ? (4x4x7)

3. should SOG or SCROG techniques be utilized for maximum yield under these circumstances?

4. Would smell be a problem for this size grow if it was vented outside through the ceilings out the attic?

1. that would work fine for 10 medium sized plants.

2. 1 gm per watt is what an expert grower could accomplish. give yourself a break on your first grow, keep it simple, and shoot for the moon when you get the basics down.

3/5. you have enough vertical space to do a regular grow. if you want to do sog/scrog, then consider dividing the grow box into two shorter areas. in one area you veg under cfl's. in the other you use your hps light to flower. this is a perpetual grow, the tradeoff is many small plants ready faster compared to a few larger ones taking longer.

4. your choice, look at cloning in growfaq section.

I guess what I'm meaning to ask is what setup should I have inside a 4x4x7 box to optimize yields?

Is it recommended to scrog or let plants grow vertically (if they have enough room)

I'm guessing they're about the same. However, I am unsure as I do no know if the stressing (from scrogging) increases yields

it seems it should be possible to shoot for the moon within these given parameters... Granted I don't want to take things out of proportion and jump into a costly 1000W hps/hydro setup my first time

1. you mean an expert that has optimized soil, atmosphere, water, nutrients and light over many grows? maybe one gram per watt or about 1/2 lb. i've watched a bunch of grows and am on my second and i would be happy with .5 gm/watt. many novice growers don;t even finish their first grow or ruin it badly so making an estimate for your first time is tough.

2/3. i have not seen a side by side comparison of the yields of traditional growing vs. sog/scog. the real benefit of sog/scog with a perpetual grow is getting a constant supply of fresh weed. larger plants and longer veg time mean fewer large crops and the need to store weed for months. that said, traditional is easier than sog/scrog and you don;t need to buy any more equipment. i would suggest going traditional the first time and see if it meets your smoking needs. no need to get more complicated if you don;t have to.
