My bud smells like hay, will it get better?

Boveda packs sure make it easy and care free in my experience. they are super cheap and last forever. If rh is around 60 that's a perfect time to add Boveda's. 62's.

To answer your question. About Details.

Time. Time time time time.

Don't obsess.

It takes time to cure. No getting around that. The objective is to not let high moisture content create an environment ripe for mold to grow. You don't need Boveda's, but sure makes it easier and more care free.

That's what Boveda's are for. To get and keep rh stable. At 60 that is perfect for adding your 59's. I forget all of the details of what chemistry is happening while bud is curing, or the fermenting process. But, that hay smell should go away after some time and you get the terpenes aroma back after a while. Me. I let the fruit dry out. And add Boveda's like right away once o feel the excessive moisture is gone away from the fruit. Like 3-5 days open dry in an open paper sack or just box lids. Then trim the stems away and put the fruit nugs in jars. I add Boveda's right away. and I'll keep burping for a while until grass smell is gone and the aromas we want come back. That's maybe a couple of months. I don't really remember to be honest. Because I don't really think about it either. It just works. But, takes time.

Over fertilizing can cause no/hay smell and bad flavor.
I dunno. I just do GH Maxibloom and use it Lucasformula style lol. Cheap as heck and no worries. It just works. If I post it's because all my methods are just no brainer. Cheap, easy and they just work. Perhaps I do oversimplify. But, overthinking is often why new growers have issues. It just works and provides satisfying results every time. Just add good genes and voila.

Have you tried farting into the jar?

Not really. Cure it, seal it, then put a bit in a jar, then take it with you in the car. Open it. Are you now panicking? Maybe leave a baggie in the car and park it in the sun. Check on your car. I bet it smells incriminating. Sometimes after being around it for so long you just get used to the smell. Even if it smells like shit, the important thing is the potency.

I've heard people say this before ....I remember some of my first grows by myself smelling terribly like hay and never really getting the super dank smell I get now ....I didn't know over ferting would cause a hay smell I know people that say it will burn different but nothing about smell .....all I can say to OP is after years and years of growing the last 10 my method has been to give just molasses in water towards the end of flower to feed my soil and the very last few waterings are plain water .....I like my plants to fade/yellow at the end ...I couldn't tell you why but it seems like the buds get way more pungent and I don't ever have the hay smell doing this ......can't tell you why it's just years of personal trial and error ...I dry/cure all by feel no special gadgets to help me ....I guess I'm just an old fart and have made enough mistakes and been around it long enough to know what I'm looking/feeling for ..............but I'd love to know the theory behind fertilizer making bud smell grassy if you care to explain ......

I personally have experienced my flowers being less flavorful and having that hay smell back when I first started growing years and years ago. Back then I would run excessive amounts of fertilizer, talking 1800-2000 ppm feedings for plants in 2.5 gal pots of soil. I'm sure I probably did other things wrong then too but my outdoor crop at the same time cured up nice and smooth with great smell so I assume the over fed indoor was the reason for hay smell. Nowadays I run much lower ppms with coco, 500-600 ppms added to tap water so usually 700-800 range. Cheers.

Smelled pretty good while growing then slow dried the whole plant for about 2 weeks and now been curing for 1 week in jars at proper RH. The color got lighter but it still has like a hayish/tea smell. I want the sweet smell!
as the chlorophyll dies it smells like grass/hay that is normal, once it has dried more thoroughly it should get a more weed smell

Do you have pics of the plant right before you harvested? Most new growers harvest way too early and there's nothing that will make them smell as good as they should.

If you're growing outdoors, when did you harvest? If you check out other threads, most outdoor growers aren't even close to harvest yet.

hmm im still a noobie grower, but what ive noticed that absolutely helped to get that hay smell out is basically put all your bud into a bag and vacuum it so theres no air, youll see once you take it out it wont smell like hay anymore. its awesome friends even noticed the difference. :)

its the bigger leaves and the shade leaves

you want to cut them off during or before drying they smell like tea or dry grass same thing can happen if the plant gos into shock and the leaves start dying

cut it off before or during drying or the smell seems to stay with it

I think that's when bacteria or mold grow when jarred without drying enough, hay is decomposition of grass from other weebeasties whereas you want it to be eating itself not getting eaten
