I LIKE Early Harvests -- Anyone Else of that Mind?

Finishing 7 weeks of flowering outdoors in Oregon soil for a strain called Afghani x Chem Diesel. I sprouted the seeds a little late (began on May 1) so these two plants could have used more vegging time. I'll try that next year.

I Harvested them today. Strong on THC, little CBDs, CBN. About 20% red pistils and about 5% amber trichomes. Most trichomes are cloudy. Lots of resin and decent cola/bud development. It's what does good for my head and body!

It seems this board favors the late-harvesting side of things.... is that true? How about you?
There are benefits to cutting early ,if you are after higher cbd, early there thc is lower and cbd higher,in some strains ,like the one I'm doing at week 6/7 the numbers are nearly = 1-1

you posted this thread, not me... i didn't approach anything, i read your post, observed your pictures, and made a statement.

the next afternoon, you talk about how the smoke is good (spoke of effects and duration), and i was surprised that it was dry and ready to smoke in under 24 hours.

you see, most of us who have been doing this for years understand that certain things take time. you harvested early; your bad, your plants, and if you're happy, your reward. kudos...

drying, however, takes a bit. from harvest to smoke in under 24 hours is impressive. i exclaimed on that point. but if you are happy, good for you!

interesting how people who think differently like to attack people for replying to threads they made... you asked for opinions, i didn't just come out of the blue you know. the wheel was invented long ago, but you go ahead and pretend you thought of it first, if it makes you feel better.
I do a 'quick-dry' on a bud to test a plant's potency. One way is to lay the bud on a fluorescent light where the ballast is. Another, which i've never tried, is using a microwave. Obviously a warm stove is the most handy. It is the best test, just not great tasting.

He/she claims 3to4 hour high ......I got molested by bigfoot trying to visit the edge of the earth riding my pet unicorn earlier today .....thankfully some green aliens came down in a ufo and saved me ...you have to believe me I said it so it must be true ..........weed taking that early is usually 15 minutes of a racing heart followed by blah .....
You can make fun from a distance, but it's because you're jealous of the long lasting effects.

I love the strain, it gives me a happy medium. Not everyone wants to get knocked out.
If you look around you'll find a strain that does everything you like and little to none of what you don't!
While high sativa's may be a bit trickier to grow. It's not hard to figure them out......
You don't "adjust" harvest to "adjust" the strain to your needs!
You change the strain to fit your needs!

For you folks who are relying on past experience concerning this early harvest business, the strain i'm using is a new hybrid from a local seed company. They are not sure of anything in this one, telling me recently that if the sativa part of the hybrid "takes over" then harvest won't come for 11-13 weeks, while if the indica dominates, then a very short flowering period. I originally got these seeds for the short flowering period for a quick indoor grow for last autumn. As things turned out, these seeds became my outdoor plants this spring. As an experiment, i planted two of them outside early April, and they flowered early, re-vegged, got confused, have airy buds but very bushy plants. These two in the pix went into the soil on June 7, and they grew as expected, flowered in late July and were harvest as they finished their 7th week of flowering. And it's good stuff!

I agree with the Dr! You should buy strains to meet your needs not harvest a plant before it's half done.
I've read the posts and tho you say you did it on purpose, I truly get the feeling you thought it was finished. Major rookie error.
Make excuses if you want but you did post this thread in a place where many pro growers read threads. You really left yourself open for criticism.

Sorry that everybody is giving you all the shit they came out their mom's ass expert growers. LOL
But really they can be helpful.
Well.... some prefer couch-lock. Not me. I like the high THC and no CBD ratio that you get from an Indica harvested early. Here's what happens: High THC is active, not couch-lock. So i clipped a bud, dried it quickly and vaped it (about half a bowl full in a DaVinci Ascent). About an hour later i was ready for the gym. Walked the mile to it, got a very strenuous workout in, walked home. We're now into hour 3. Showered, had some yogurt and began digging and planting autumn lettuce. Then i realized the high was passing away. Opposite of couch-lock.
When you harvest late, some THC turns into various CBDs. First of all, that means less THC. Second, the CBDs counteract the high effect of the remaining THC to some extent. AND, the CBDs will have their sedative effect. I'm avoiding all that. It's true, on the other hand, that late harvest produces more buds and more of everything, including those CBDs. But here in Oregon, i'm limited to having up to 8 ounces (legally). So i aim for that.
For those of you who grow to make money, of course you will harvest late to get the most weight. I don't sell anything. And, many folks prefer the effects of late-harvest pot. I say, "Enjoy!" But not me.

You do realize there are many strains including some indicas that even at full harvest will not give you couch lock!

Hey Who -- i don't mind criticism: sometimes it's useful, sometimes not. What surprises me is that so many 'pro' growers are so 'couch-locked' in their minds. "There's only one way to do it..."

Here's some background over the years on this early-late harvest controversy:

Having started with cannabis in the mid-60s, it is true to say that there have been a LOT of developments to today.

Cutting early and what you did was two different things. That doesn't mean in week four or five (and that's what the pic looks like) to cut. Early cutting means okay it's a 10 week flowering strain and someone takes it at week 8 etc. No one that I have ever come across EVER has a legitimate reason for taking a plant down when it is THAT young. I get why people take them down early but not half way done.

Well, just so you get it right: This new strain here (Afghani x Chem Diesel) promised to be early-flowering and excellent for indoor grows: not a large plant and 8-10 weeks [maybe] to flower. I chopped those two plants as they were finishing week 7. The pic of the whole plant, now that i look at the pic, was taken a week before harvest. You can see the date on the pic file name.

The plants were not large, but the colas looked fine, the larger ones about two inches in diameter.

Given the descriptions of early-middle-late harvests here:
http://www.dutch-passion.com/en/news-and-development/when-should-you-harvest-cannabis/
I harvested somewhere between early and middle.

Thanks for that sites info it makes things a bit more clear.

Harvest early.

Early-harvested cannabis is not quite as popular as it used to be a couple of decades ago. Many connoisseur smokers feel that commercial growers ruin their crop by harvesting early instead of waiting an extra week or two for the crop to fully mature and develop a more ‘rounded’ effect. Fans of early harvested crops claim that the smoke offers a unique energetic ‘buzz’ with a special cerebral impact. An early harvested crop can be done when

  1. The pistils are all still white, and all the new pistils being produced are also still white. The pistils are the easily identified hairs that come out of the calyx, as the plant ages the pistils turn from white to golden brown.
  2. The trichomes are predominantly clear. The trichomes are the small resin glands that cover the buds, they contain the cannabinoids which get us high. The trichomes are initially clear and colourless, but as the cannabis plant approaches maturity the trichomes tend to change from clear to become increasingly cloudy. As they are left longer the trichomes start to become increasingly amber coloured. Many home growers that prefer early-harvested cannabis will chop their cannabis plants down while the trichomes are clear, before they become cloudy.

Many fans of early harvested cannabis will often grow specific varieties which they feel offer the best ‘early harvest high’, this is a question of personal taste. Often they will have grown the variety and smoked samples harvested at early, normal and late dates. So they will know that the variety should be harvested after a certain number of weeks, when the trichomes are mostly clear and before the pistils have started to run brown.

With early-harvested cannabis plants it is often obvious to the grower that the buds are still developing and growing. An early harvest often means that you will lose some of the harvest potential, but if you like early-harvested cannabis then its a price worth paying.

Harvest at normal time.

Probably most home growers these days look to harvest their crop when it is nether too early nor too late. Often they will look for the point when the trichomes have started to transition from clear to cloudy but before the trichomes have started to become amber. For many growers this gives them a cannabis harvest with a rounded and enjoyable high, neither too heavy nor too cerebral. Experienced growers will be able to notice subtle differences on plant feeding behaviour to judge harvest point. For example, hydro growers will notice when a plant is starting to slow down on the feed by looking at the electrical conductivity (‘EC’) of the feed solution, that can be a signal to harvest.

For many growers a good time to harvest is when they see around 50%-75% of the pistils (hairs) are brown or when they see most of the trichomes have developed a milky (cloudy) appearance.

Harvest late.

Late-harvested home grown cannabis is probably becoming more popular these days. There are a few reasons for this trend:

  1. late harvested crops are often heavier because they have been allowed an extra week or two to finish, these allows the buds to get heavier, more plentiful and more resinous
  2. if you prefer the extra sedation and strength of late harvested cannabis you often have to grow it yourself. ‘Street weed’ is usually harvested at the earliest opportunity because dealers like to produce their crops as quickly as they can caring little for the optimal harvest point. So if you prefer a fully matured cannabis crop then you probably need to grow it yourself.

Lmao .....yeah your rite I'm jealous of your completely under developed schwagg that was harvested a month to soon .....it's not a distance thing that makes me make fun of you .....I'd do it even more face to face ....il bet my trim is 10x stronger than any flower you have there noobs .....but you'll have to wait to try it because I don't pick my apples when there the size of a quarter and green ......lol Poor plants never had a chance with you growing them ...il be holding a small rip gathering for these plants .....there will be real weed there and no OP is not invited he is a plant murderer ...:cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss:
