I read this yesterday, and I thought it would appeal to some people at this site.
Being an agnostic, I find Hitchens points most compelling...

May 7, 2007, 9:59 pm Hitchens, Sharpton and Faith

By Sewell Chan

You could tell from the background music that played beforehand – alternating recordings of James Brown and Gregorian chant – that this was going to be an unusual debate.
The question under debate (“Is God great?”) and the speakers — two men who are often depicted in harsh caricatures by their critics — might have caused some to expect something like a circus. Perhaps surprisingly, it turned out to be the public intellectual event of the evening, a bit like Bertrand Russell vs. C. S. Lewis.
Taking the atheist position was Christopher Hitchens, the journalist and author of a new book arguing that “religion poisons everything.” In defense of God was none other than the Rev. Al Sharpton, a man of the cloth who is perhaps even better known for his political and civil rights activism than for his training as a preacher.
Mr. Hitchens and Mr. Sharpton engaged in a sold-out debate tonight before a crowd that packed the Celeste Bartos Forum at the New York Public Library’s Beaux-Arts headquarters on Fifth Avenue. The polite but vigorous discussion was moderated by Jacob Weisberg of Slate Magazine, who began by asking Mr. Hitchens, “What have you got against God?”

Round 1
Mr. Hitchens said he realized that belief in God was irrational at age 9. He cited two arguments against faith. First, that religion is simply untrue, religions having arisen to explain phenomena that could not be accounted for – like diseases and natural disasters – for which there are now scientific explanations.

i don't need to read the full article to know that I'd agree with everything Hitchens said. i'm also quite prepared to argue his standpoint (without ever reading the article) should anybody wish to take the pos. of the rev.

I didn't really see an argument. I saw Hitchens making some very reasonable points and Sharton basically repeating over and over 'That's not God. You cannot disprove God.'

If Sharpton truely believes that the Bible is the factual words and accounts of God! Then you would expect him to at least defend its principles.

I really hate that idiot, Sharpton.

Did I say I saw one? If not, then to whom were you referring when you made the statement underlined in red?

i agree.

Hitchens should have kept his comments directed toward the contradictions of ANY god belief. Not talk about the inconsistancies of Christianity.

But the Rev. didn't PROVE anything either. He just prointed out the flaws in Hitchens' attack on Christianity.

But I love how the Rev. says that even if the stories in the Bible turn out false he would still believe in god because of his personal experiences. Typical of religious people. Evidence and proof have nothing to with their world view.

I fucking hate religious people. i'm thinking of starting my own religion, where I get lots of people following me and giving me money. Set up my own community... a great place where you can play your guitar and farm organic vegetables. I'd make it so I was the only guy that was allowed to breed with the women too, what with me being the second coming and all, it's only right that the next set of offspring be from the loins of god, albeit indirectly.

What we need is... a belief system that revolves around the non-belief in things that don't exist.

OK. I'd be the third coming.

Who's to say david wasn't for real and he died for our sins all over again. What was the real difference between David and Jesus.

I can think of plenty of similarities.

As is anybody that tries to fool people into believing that they have true faith in these gods. They're all liars in the modern world. I've only ever met one true christian, one true believer in a god, and that man is 7xstall, here on this site. Every other person I've questioned on this subject has failed to convince me they truly believe in a god, except this man.

It's not just about saying you believe, you must have reasoning for this belief. You have to have thought long and hard, truly asked yourself if you believe. A lot of people say things because they believe it is the right thing to say, so many people are afraid of speaking the truth for fear of what everyone else pretends to think.

I'm tired of bullshit... and I don't accept it from anybody. This has gotten me into a lot of trouble in the past.
