Household LED Light Bulb Grow

Hello,

This is my first post to the forum. I have been absorbing a lot of information recently and was looking for your opinions as to whether this equipment plan is feasible for any sort of decent results.

I have inherited a mother and am in the process of rooting clones at the moment. OG Kush, nice smoke.

My Grow Area is 65 x 65 x 230 (cm) giving me a total floor space of about 2ft x 2ft to work with for this first mini grow.

My question is about basing my grow lighting around standard household LED bulbs, specifically, Phillips 13.5w Warm White LED light bulbs. Their colour temperature is 2700k and they emit 1520 lumens. Here is the amazon link:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Edison-Screw-Light-Bulb/dp/B010UQJM48

The reason I am choosing these over CFL's is that the beam angle is focused down which I am hoping will give me better penetration into the canopy.

I plan to use adaptors to make a five bulb light that covers a 30cm x 30cm area like this:

Where each of the diamonds is a bulb.

Then have them arranged in a 2 x 2 pattern over the canopy, with supplemental 23 watt CFL's hanging vertically in glass tubes, they are the green circles:
Full Light Fixture.png
This gives me a total power draw of 390w and a total lumen output of 37,420 over my 2sqft x 2sqft area.

The cost of purchasing everything required for the whole of the set up including carbon filter, fan, dwc res, nutes, hangers, lamps and adapters is under £200.

I already have a veg and clone station.

I want to go straight in when rooted onto a 12/12 schedule with 9 single cola plants SOG style, using a DWC with net pots.

Plants to be arranged like:

Res.png

Using the General Hydroponics Nutes, in the correct for canna doses, with a mother that is known to yield adequately, putting 8 inch tall clones straight in to 12/12. Barring any root rot or PH disasters.Would it work?

Possible to pull an oz per plant?

Is there anyone growing with these bulbs at the moment. They seem good output for the wattage.

I know lumens is not PAR but who's got a PAR meter anyway. I know lux is more important than lumens. But the lights can be manoeuvred to be at any angle and give the best coverage to every single leaf.

I saw a thread like 2 weeks ago, it was a dude with a lux meter, he bought a load of these and was doing tests with the meter. He then threw 6 household LED lamps on a board in wardrobe ceiling and filled the whole thing with one plant. He killed it. He then did it again and again for several grows.

I have searched and searched for this golden thread a million times because its what I am basing my plans on but I cant find it for shit. Maybe I dreamt the whole thing. If anyone knows any grow reports or threads discussing using household LED light bulbs so I can cross reference the results they get I would be extremely grateful.

Taking the lens and reflector off of the bulb to expose the led chip in these lights results in a dramatic increase in the lux at distance in the thread.

I am trying to work out whether to use this set up or purchase an LED panel. Maybe the mars hydro 600. But at an actual power draw of around 250w and the one fixed panel with no manoeuvrability so your comments on this vs that considering around the same price point and my plan to do a 9 plants sog in this space would be most welcome.

Sorry for war and peace.

I plan to do the shop this weekend and got giddy with paint.

Check reviews on those Mars , maybe I'm remembering wrong but I think I was reading where some peeps didn't like em so much I personally don't have one so don't take my word on it but it is worth checking out first

Yeah there seems to be some complaints around actioning warranties etc. But overall the feedback seems good for the price point. It grows stuff. I'm just thinking that the Phillips are going to use decent LED's. They are a good brand and offer the most light output for the lowest wattage.

What I'm hoping to achieve is something of a cob effect but with more power for less cash with these bulbs.

I guess my main question for the forumers, will any light intense enough at 2700k be enough to flower? Is there any reason LED's emitting 2700k would not grow canna.

And is there any alternatives that would offer greater *light* yields for the price.

Idk ,but those seem like good questions . I'm trying to learne more about lighting too so I'll follow along. I've been reading about finish lighting it's all the way up to 10,000k . I don't understand because my hps is like 3700k my mh is something like 6700k . So I've tried to find a schedule for lighting how, when how much what kind for what duration there is a lot of info out there but I'm having trouble putting it together so I can understand it.
Hey on a personal note 9fingers are you by chance a carpenter lol
Peace out bare

Thanks for your interest bare. I wish I was a carpenter. The things I would build! No my DIY skills are in general pretty awful. But this is all really simple stuff to put together.

I think I need to just do it for myself and take the financial hit if it fails. The technology in these household LED lamps have come on leaps and bounds over the last year or so.

Phillips were putting out 18.5w sun master bulbs last year for double the price and the same light output/colour temp.

It sucks that I didn't save the thread I found. I cant remember if it was here, 420 forum, icmag etc etc. He does back to back grow journals using these lights or similar. Trying to find it on Google is a nightmare. As soon as you search LED bulbs and grow it is just results and ads for panels. "CFL vs Household LED grow journal" just brings up results for standard power consumption comparisons in a none grow setting. I have found one reddit on the subject with hardly any responses. Everyone links to diy cob boards when the question is asked.

I'm telling you man, Google used to be useful. How many forum results do you see nowadays for search terms. Hardly any. It's ads, and websites masquerading as legit sources of information that are really just ads. Perhaps I need to learn to Google better.

Wow, that's a buttload of lumens for that wattage.
The ones I use are 18w and only 900 lumens!

Here's what I use -

Very similar sort of set up to my plans it sounds like greenlog. Could you give me some more info on the situation?

How many grows have you done using your set up? How many total watts and lumens do you have over what area? And what kind of results are you getting? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I've vegged several (6?) plants to large bushy adulthood under these, but never flowered - I use an hps for that.
I have a rectangular veg tent 50cm x 100cm. I have one mother in there and a dozen clones vegging strong, but getting crowded.
It has a power cord to two e27 sockets, zip tied to the ceiling bar.
In the right socket there's that 7-way splitter I showed you, in the left one there's a similar 4-way splitter.
I have a 48w cool white cfl in there, and the other 10 slots have a mix of those purples, and those warm/natural/cool whites.
It's lush in there, they love it.

I'm doing a similar thing in my veg closet, but that's also got a big 250w cfl supplementing.
You are probably disappointed that I haven't grown with purely those, always with at least a little cfl thrown in :P

Purples are 800lm, whites are 900lm, average 850. I have ten of them, ~8500 lumens from the leds in that tent.
Plus the 48w cfl, and I don't know how many lumens that is :)

Haha such a tease man! I'm only doing flower with these little bastards. If I lived alone I would hps the shit out of it. They are affordable. But heat and cooling is an issue.

And I know HPS doesn't cause fires users do etc etc but I couldn't sleep at night with any watt hps as I have an (irrational?) fear of fire killing my fam. Like the jungle book tiger. Maybe when I graduate to underground shipping containers in a field outside a mansion I will be comfortable with a mini thermonuclear hell cell (1000w hps). But until then I am stuck with LED's!

Thanks for this. That's a great website do you get stealthy shipping with this dudes and are you happy with shipping times

Hi
On my phone so struggle with posting links, but I recently did a grow using 9x led bulbs with the covers off, and I posted a few pics /details on someone's post on here called "200w cob led light question". I got 3.5 oz off 2 plants in a cabinet that is 15" x 28" x 32", so just over half the size of yours. Only my 3rd ever grow so if I can do it anyone can.
Have a google search for " store bought led + icmag" as well. Sounds similar to the thread you are asking about, and nearer the end there are several actual grows detailed. Well worth a read
Edit - managed to link it

You are a live saver bro. That is the exact thread I was looking for. I honestly can't thank you enough for posting this.

And thanks for posting where to find details of your grow. I'll definately check it out. 3.5 oz is decent for 9 bulbs! What wattage were they?

I have found a supplier that can get the phillips bulbs in the amazon link in first post for £4 each. So have bought 25 and am now going to wire them together on a single over head wooden board to cover the whole area. Once I get everything set up I will start a journal.

Right now I'm about to re read that whole thread, such good info. Thanks again bro!

Glad I could be of help.
That thread was the one which made me swap my cfl's for standard led bulbs. I used a mix of 13 and 15w bulbs with covers off, (all the same 1520 lumens with cover), and a total of 129w.
I got my 15w from B&Q and the 13w ones from Tesco - now about £5 each at Tesco last time I looked.
A tip that helped me - on my wooden board I drilled large holes between the bulbs to allow air to rise through it rather than have to go around the board. Also had a couple of decent PC fans under the board blowing air over the bulbs.
Good luck with your grow.
