i seem to find with LED its kinda like a PC you get the newest fastest thing. and a week later something better comes out. when I built my cxa set up. 3070's where the new shit(so new that drivers where hard to find that pushed 36volts).... then the 3590 came out about 3 weeks after i started growing...
 
yes its like buying hard drives. the 4TB was always cheaper than the 5TB on a $/GB basis.

in any industry the flagship stuff is usually reserved for people with no budget that need the "best"

the only thing that matters to me. is the numbers.. just like when i build an engine.. i DGAF what it looks like or who the parts are made by. I want it to perform well and not break.
 
Sometimes reading to much leads to confusion and second guessing for Newbs. I got a 1.6 sq.ft. cabinet with Mylar lined walls. Going to run three 1212s on a 10 inch profile passive sink using a Meanwell 185 @ 1.05A. Going to grow continuous popsickles. According to calculator i'll get around 1400 PPFD. I have the sink tapped for BJB holders. would I get better spread if I just used Artic Silver adhesive and glued the chips to the sink or use the BJBs? Probably overthinking this.

If it was me with the limited space and pushing them at 1050 I would run them bare, no optics.
 
Use the holders and the best thermal grease you can find. Arctic silver works, Arctic Cooling MX4 is my go to for computer related things, so I use that. Non conductive is a plus.
 
I am set for BJBs including grease Mr. Cob sells. I have a tube of the one part adhesive I bought from Steve's still in the toolbox. Got to love LED forum 5 minutes and two polar opposite answers.

What answers are conflicting? You're asking if you should use the holders or just adhesive correct?
I also would go bare optics.

I'm not a guru by any means, just an opinion on what would be more efficient to keep the COBs cool.

Thermal grease and no optics.........I want to be clear I am not suggesting just gluing your COB's with no thermal grease/paste :)

I got you. this stuff I got from Steves is a one part silver infused adhesive. Used it on three watt stars no sweat made assembly a snap. Guess Gorilla glue is out. :) I saw a vid on Youtube from Green whatever for attaching COBs direct but didn't like the Kapton tape thing.
 
bjbs are the ideal 'no optics' holder. they catch the little bit of light out past 120 degrees and cut down the glare a bit when youre working in the garden
 
Im all for the bjb's myself. I absolutely hate the ideal holders. It seems if a cob is used and removed from an ideal the cob won't lock in secure enough there after even in a new holder. The only thing that I don't like about the bob is that there is no polarity markings on the back of the bjb but that's just dumb in comparison. Holders are cheap and save your cobs for future use/projects.
 
The BJB for the 058 have plus and minus on the front and back of the holder, on the back its set inside one of the recesses. Maybe its the same on the back of the 048s
