Is 600w per plant over-kill?

Hi Guys,

I'm just finishing a new grow room. Originally I was going to do 12 plants under 2 x 600W MH/HPS lamps. 6 plants under each bulb. However, due to strict laws here I've decided just to go with just 2 plants.

Is it over-kill to use one bulb per plant? Or should I save electric and go with the single 600w for the 2 plants?

Your advice is appreciated.

I think your 600w would do just fine. Just depends how tall your tent is. And how big you want those babies to grow. Being hps-mh you can't have them too close. As they'll cook the tops pretty fast.

I have a small room, so height isn't an issue, however I was under the impression that HPS only penetrates a few feet - you also need to include a foot or more between the top of the plant and the bulb (I'm using canopys with built in extractors which vent off outside)

My idea was to veg them until about 1.5 feet, then flower, resulting in a 3 foot plant. How does that sound?

I'm just wondering if I would get lot of extra bud throwing another 600w in there? i.e. I know light is a big factor, but at what point do you get diminishing returns?

Nah man your a little offbase with that reply........he too can certainly achieve quite close distances between lights and canopies with a cooltube version of the hps instaed of an openwing or an enclosed hood, some hoods have air flow vents some dont! But tbh id NEVER grow hids without some sort of air cooled bulbs

In that case. Disregard my response to your question. I'm a noob. And I've only used LED. With a few outdoor attempts.

I forgot about the cool tube and glass thing.

Its not that for me i just didnt want him thinking he couldnt get hid's close to his flowers cause he can, i actually had one growing into the light and hood itself, but honestly i can NEVER have enough "decent cfm" inline fans though, they truly are multipurpose!

If i keep my head screwed on straight for the entire veg/flower process i can usually have wonderful results with t-5's and hps lights too man. It's hard when your raised as in a "if it isnt broke don't fix it " household cause old habits die hard man!

Here's my first attempt at mr.nices medicine man and a 600 mag ballast cooltube, bear in mind this was several years ago. It does highlight how close they can get though, along with my intense overwatering of equatorial leaning sativa's that i had no clue about at the time............i thought it was feral hemp seed at first lmao! Live and learn right?

1200w seems like alot for 2 plants unless you are going to veg for for several months.
a 600w covers roughly 4'x4' is your 3 foot tall plant going to cover 16 square feet?

You should be able to get two plants pretty huge under one 600w. Even then seems a little overkill, I would do 4 under that light and aim for a pound if I were you to make it worth it. Otherwise you're going to be vegging for a very long time and the price of electricity may not be worth it for just two plants to veg that long.

I grow w/ 600 hps watts per plant n love it. It's absolutely perfect. Reason being, your flower run lasts 2 months. So when you start flower you start veg. Top your plants. 2 months later you have decent sized plants that grow into the 600 perfectly & give you a pound a plant depending on the strain. Perfect!
I've recently taken down my hps room to go all led though & will be shooting for 300-400 watts a plant to get my pound a plant.
Just got 2 pounds off 600 watts w/ 4 plants on the SunCloak vertical led system. Bad ass set-up. Never thought I'd double my yield w/ only 600 watts. Crazy!

Each plant gets 600 hps watts. Some get a lil more with side-lighting. Average yields are 12-18 oz. depending on the strain.
All you gotta do is start cloning 10 days before flip. Veg your next run while your flowering. Once you harvest n clean the room, you put your 2 month vegged bushes in under 600 each. Bango! They stretch n fill in leaving absolutely no light hitting the floor. No wasted light & plenty of pot!
It's how me n my friends do it!
