Attic? good or bad?

hi,

currently my rather large grow tent is sitting quite happily beside me in my bedroom. it's starting to become a quite an obstacle to work around so i got thinking...

Where can i place this thing....

The best place i thought of was my attic. The best thing is that the only entrance to the attic is in my room. then i got carried away with ideas of having a cool rope ladder etc. anyway...

is this a good idea?

it's full of bugs! and rats too i'm pretty sure. but i was going to pop into town and purchase me something to help out. if i got it clean up there it'd be sweet!

also would the cold be a factor? i live in the U.K and winters creeping up on us fast. when my light's on (600w hps) i guess temp would be ok but when it's off would it get too cold? i haven't checked out the temps up there yet.

it's also good because it's pure darkness up there.

is this a good idea? or should i re-think this one?

thanks

sorry for the 143,789 questions :blsmoke:

Seems like a good idea to me! How big is the tent? The bugs aren't good of course, but will they be able to get to the plants if they're in the tent? The cold shouldn't be a problem as long as it doesn't drop below 60 during the night, and doesn't get too hot up there during the day. You don't want your temps fluctuating more than 10-15 degrees or so. Get a hygrometer and test out the high/low temps for 24 hours. Hope this helps!

Maintaining temps would be my biggest concern. How cold CAN it possibly get? Can you heat your room up and let it flow up thru the opening? Things like this need to be dealt with, which can be tricky out of season. Then there's the summer heat and stench?
Sounds like a good room.

attics tend to stay the same temperature as it is outside....but im sure if it got too cold and its a big enough tent you could use a small space heater or something if it got to be too big of a problem. and for the bugs i put a couple bug bombs and traps and stuff out a couple days before i moved anything in there

i'm sorting myself out with adequate equipment to control the pests.

it's just the heat that concerns me now. i have an extraction fan if it's too hot but nothing to help the cold. will putting a small heater in the tent help? could it cause any problems being in there?

thanks

im not sure if i would put the heater in the tent...more like farther away but in the same room just to keep the room warm

putting it in the tent might cause problems with the plants

Yeah I doubt that you would need a heater actually inside. How big is the tent? The light should provide you with plenty of heat. You might just need a heater to keep them warm enough when the lights are off when you start flowering.

yeah i was just saying put one in the attic somewhere else when the lights are off just so the plants dont get too cold and you could keep it pretty far away and on low and it would still help

I have my plants in my attic right now but I will move it to my basement on the next run. I live in the Northeast US and it gets pretty hot in the summer and brutally cold in the winter. It gets way to hot in my attic. some of the lower leaf has been drying out and browning. The tops are fine though. this is my first time so I and I have kids so I wanted to be careful.

i grow in my attic and what i did was just take one of my a/c(heat) lines that runs into a bathroom and disconnect it from the bathroom ceiling vent and connected it to the cab, gets to be like 130 in my attic during peak of summer and 40 or so during low of winter, but my cab stays between 70-85 at all times. my cab is also insulated just like the walls of a house so that prolly helps too. i keep my house between 68-74 :D
oh i use a 400w hps for flowering and a 400w mh for veg

I am new to the indoor scene but I think any space you have available can be adapted with some work. I would love to have mine in a bedroom, but that is a no go, the attic is my only option as well.

My plan was to set up my homebox l up there with a 600w MH/HPS and a cool tube /fan set up. Then another exhaust duct running to a carbon filter, with a fresh air intake duct coming from the room below, so AC in summer and heat in the winter. I will also need to insulate the box as well.

I think bl33b's idea of snaking a duct from the bathroom is an awesome idea, I may have to rethink my fresh air/exhaust idea and go that way. Hell that would save the $$ of a second fan, the exhaust line can just exit and head directly to the carbon filter.

This board rocks!! I learn something new every day here.
