I'm new, this is my first grow. I've found most of the answers I've been looking for, for the most part. I just can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for regarding trimming leaves. From my understanding, I would trim lower leaves if they're underperforming, or dead. But what about fan leaves? Big ones that are in the way. Any suggestions?

You never want to trim the fan leaves unless you're doing cuttings and that's only to encourage root growth instead of leaf growth. Think of the fan leaves as the plants solar panels...without them the plant cannot absorb the light that it needs to flourish.

These guys got it right ^^^^^^^^Here's why - First pic is the bottom of the plant. Do it right and you don't need to give buds "extra light" to grow solid nugs.
It also makes the main happy.
Spend you time dialing in your nutrient to your plant.....This is water only organic soil I build....GG4 8 weeks to the day at that pic.

exactly, buds are made up of calyxes, specialized growth designed to propagate the species, not designed to photosynthesize. you could purposely shade every bud on a plant, and as long as the leaves are getting sun, they'll grow just the same

the only time i ever cut a sun leaf off is if its over 50% damaged, or its seriously interfering with ventilation, which shouldn't be an issue if you trained the plant right before you put it in flower

Never trim your fan leaves unless the leaf is yellowing and about to fall off. Keep all your healthy fan leaves.

If your growing out door don't trim but if your growing indoor you can absolutely trim them. Only trim one that are shading lower growth. Indoor lights don't penetrate the canopy the way the sun does out door

I had this season an indica outdoors (no idea what strain) not even the sun could penetrate her branches. It was like a christmass tree wrapped up with string. Stems hard and ready to snap when I was trying to bend them to let some light in (flowering period). Inside the first set of branches it was total darkness and full of spider webs... I said fuck it and leave her like that till the finish. Every bud on her was rock hard. EVERY!

Cutting off the leaves will stunt growth. No, I wouldn't trim those fan leaves..

If they aren't getting enough light to be useful, they fall off on their own.
