Perlite Brand

A word of caution for those who use perlite.

I've recently picked up a bag of Black Gold perlite from Sun Gro Horticulture (8-quart bag), and wish I hadn't. As always, I thoroughly rinse my soil additives. For perlite I use a 5-gallon paint strainer bag. Works perfectly. While rinsing the Black Gold brand I found a lot of foreign particles, specifically small pieces of wood. As any organic farmer knows, foreign wood particles may contain dangerous (to plants) molds, bacteria, fungus, insect eggs, etc.

Additionally, I found the size of the perlite itself was inconsistent. About 20% of the bag contained medium size pieces, while 80% was very small. Personally, when I use perlite I prefer that it is consistent in size (medium) and free of any foreign debris.

Admittedly, I have had good luck with Miracle-Gro perlite (8-quart bag). This brand also comes with fine dust particles from the manufacturing process. But a quick rinse washes it all out. Never had any foreign particles to deal with.

The only problem with the Miracle-Gro brand is the $14 per 8-quart bag price tag. If anyone knows of a supplier with a better offer, I'd love to know.

When it comes to perlite I usually pony up for the miricle grow, yeah its more expensive but as you have stated its clean. I also like the ziplock bags it comes in, keeps things tidy.

IMG_0947.JPG I get mine from the local nursery wholesaler. 14.50 per 4 cubic foot bag! I mix mine with pro mix so I don't wash it. I'm not sure how many quarts that is but this is clean and course. But as we all know it's mixed sizes.

This seems like to much but googled the conversion 119 quarts to 4 cubic feet. Seems like there Is a lot to be saved shopping elsewhere.

Miracle grow perlite has added nutes, that's why I just use a basic perlite

Thanks for the info!
That $5 per bag at Home Depot is a good find. Until I find a nursery selling a better option, I can't complain about $5 per bag of good stuff.

The Vigoro perlite looks like the better choice for saving money. However, the size of the perlite is larger than I generally prefer to use in soil.

If you dial in the sand ( coarse and very coarse) content of your soil (some experiment, able to do a soil profile (simple)), you can eliminate the perlite entirely. I use it at about 1/3 the volume needed for un-tinkered with soil. An $8. bag lasts me 40 forevers.
