COB's for dummies

I just wonder if anyone could maybe build on growmau5's video where he lists setups with room sizes and potentially a price list but that would be asking a lot.

It would be ideal to stop people like me posting countless threads asking "what setup for my room" and if it could include the latest equipment available that would help us.

It seems people are preferring bridgelux and citizens due to their price and performance compared to cree's and for me, comparing them using data sheets is confusing.

If you have a setup you're running post it below too, with your room dimensions.

This isn't a thread to discuss problems with others lights though :P be nice!

Its really not, if you just know what youre looking at.

Case in point. Voltage and amperes are the two main things to consider.

Pick the chips you want. Figure out voltage at the current you want to run them at. Find driver that has enough voltage.

Whats confusing about it???



I feel its more a matter of being simply lazy (no offense) because it can be a bit daunting figuring out where to start.

Also, Im pretty sure the general consensus is in the neighborhood of 20-30w/sqft as a general guideline.

if it wasn't confusing then why isn't there a single cob that people use. People use different ones for different reasons and that isn't really what I want to achieve here. That was just my personal opinion..

People choose different cobs because of competition, not confusion. Much like people buy toyotas instead of only fords, etc.

Remember were discussing DIY custom lights here, as there are plenty of off-the-shelf options available. And custom lights rely on individual needs.

If you are looking for help we need to know something about what your goals are. What your budget is. How many watts you want. I feel those two are needed at the very least.

And really, the only way for this thread to come anywhere near accomplishing what you want it to, IMO, is to provide an example of what to look for in data sheets (mainly amps & volts) and teach people how to quickly find and understand the information they need.

Otherwise I feel its more of a "please just build a light for me" game.

Personally I have a 1mx1mx2m tent. Was going for a cree 3590 with mw hlg-240-1050b or 1400(?) but then got told citizen and vero are now competitive and cheaper than COB's, led me to think that people sharing their builds and whys would give inspiration to others and help them improve theirs.

If you have any advice on what would be optimal for me Id be greatful. I don't mind the price as long as it's the best build I can get for my money, maybe some blues and far reds in there, dimmable, will be used for both veg and flowering. Preferably passively cooled. And have to be able to get in the UK or via alibaba. Thanks :weed:

It's not that. I just wanted to start a thread similar to the one stickied and now closed where people discussed their builds. There's no underlying motive. But I do want to build my own DIY and if you're offering to give me advice I won't turn that down :cool:

3000K is the single cob you can use. Does veg and flower perfectly.

Now picking the brand and model is really up to what you want to spend. The tech is changing so fast that whats the best or best value at the moment will be out dated in 3 months time.
When I got my first ones it was CREE 3070 was the best of the best, Then did a small upgrade at the start of the year which had CREE 3590 as the best. Now you have CitiLEDs which out do it at better pricing.
Recently picked up a single CitiLED CLU058-1825, running it at 257W it completely destroys my old 5X Cree 3070 setup @ 50W each.

Personally I have 6 Vero29B's on an HLG-320H-C1050A. Gives me a range from about 120w all the way up t0 360w.

If I were building another light though I would try my best to source a new HLG-480H-1400A and combine it with 5 Vero29C's for possibly one of best valued lights possible IMO. The voltages work out almost perfectly, which has been extremely difficult to do with the new Vero29C.

Im a little anal about trying to find ideally matched COBs and drivers though.

Well that's pretty nutty. Those closed loop CPU coolers keep my 125 watt i7 cool, and all 125 watts are eventually output as heat, unlike COBs which output much of their energy consumption in the form of photons. I bet you're running that guy at about 60-80 C?

Edit: just saw your temp readings, that's pretty good! You might do better with a larger radiator, but that would be mucho expensivo in comparison.

Converting the room to full custom loop at the end of this harvest (2ish weeks)
Have all the parts ready to go just have to move them on to the water blocks and re-wire it all.

But no point jacking this thread when I already have a build thread.

I'm looking cover a 4x4 area and to expand to a 4x8 area over time. I seen all GrowMau5 Videos and at the end of one someone had mentioned they were using 72v [email protected] and @Growmau5 said he had wished he had went that direction, and I'm curious why? I have a 6' 2" ceiling so height is an issue, currently using a 1k HPS and 2 Mars Hydro II 900's to cover a 8x4. I have a budget of $1000-$1200 to start. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance :)
