Hydroton alternatives dwc

If you don't eat them you'll be ok
No you won't. .cannabis is a "cleaner plant" it pulls contaminates from its growing medium and stores it in the plant. Hemp is planted in radioactive and heavy metal contaminated soil to clean it. They have been using it to clean up radiation at the Chernobyl reactor site. This is why so many people get bent over what people use for nutrients and additives, bad nutes could literally poison you if they contain heavy metals/contaminates/etc.

Marbles, $1 bag at dollar store. They also have river rock, polished glass pieces, decorative stone for the same price. 2 bags for a 6" net pot. Only drawback is it weighs 3x as much as expanded clay.

Just use hydroton, once you wash it, you do wash it before use right? it isn't dusty. I've been reusing the same stuff for 1.5yrs, over multiple grows.

I've heard that it's not especially wise to eat more than 2 meals a week out of the ocean in one form or another due to the mercury levels in the ocean life we make into food... technically I don't eat it at all which is why I don't know for certain but I live in a coastal state and I've heard Ive heard it more than once, maybe it's a local thing but I was pretty sure the ocean was connected or something right? lol...

it's like the road and highway system, you're never lost seeing all roads connect....
Most metals have a much higher rate of blood dosing when smoked vs eaten. (does depend on the form, and the metal, I know aluminum and sodium are things that are worse when smoked).

Im trying to avoid hydroton because of the dust. The lava rocks are dusty also. Anything else thats reusable besides that?
Just use lots of rockwool. Get rockwool plugs, rockwool cubes, soak some rockwool in water and tear it down to the size you want. And I agree with the smaller net pots- besides the tipping aspect, I can't see any real advantage to larger ones. Also if you dont have any sort of top feed/drippers, you basically don't need a medium. If there were neoprene collars that could somehow support the damn adult plant, those would work too (this would be dumb tho). Unfortunately have to hold the damn thing up somehow.

I was thinking about ways to grow with just collars, but I really don't know how you could support it from small size to larger. Maybe if you used like 4 collars on a somewhat mature plant

and this. you could probably use whatever the hell you want. I bet you could use styrofoam packing peanuts- anything that won't get eaten away by bacteria. I actually have no idea why mineral/rock based media is preferred at all. Most of them have almost 0 cation-exchange capacity, are oddly ph sensitive (meaning they fucking dissolve somewhat), usually contain some trace bad metals (lots of aluminum) and some other weird contaminants. Also read somewhere that humics/fulvics helps dissolve metals out of the rock material... so why the hell are we using rocks again?

I made so many aluminum pipes in high school, 3-4/week at times. I went to a voc/tech for machining and it was a good way to make $$ on the side. Opps, sorry for the Alzheimer's. I smoked out of one for most of that time too.

I've been growing around 30" plants in 2"collars in net pots, no medium in lp aeto/nft rails. I did have a pvc support structure, but most of my strains didn't need it. If you used silicone to glue the 2"collar into the net pot, then stack a 4" and 6" collar and net pot as the plant grows, again gluing them in and also together, I think it would support a decently large plant. A simple tripod support on top of the 6"collar could provide plenty of support.

Sweet! So stacking collars does work. I really think I might try that and pellets next time, I feel much better about that. Agreed that everything will kill us eventually, but one of the great things about hydro is getting to put exactly what you want in the solution- If i can get the rocks and shit out of there, I'm all for it. I'll save my cancer for the liquor, nicotine and red meat.

Lol I'm not even going to think about the janky metal pipes I made in high school. Made a metal scrap bong- took a hit then told somebody about how easy the weld was on the bottom. They then pointed out the piece of lead bongsmilie

Not sure about the airsoft BBs, last I remember there was a bunch of different materials, but there's maybe some that have a purity guarantee on them. I saw a bunch of pellets used for stuffing bean-bags, bag chairs, and dolls- there might be some bigger ones that'll work good.

They make rockwool croutons that are like 3/8x3/8 square little rockwool chunks that help skip all that ripping up larger cubes and work lovely when u pop a clone in a 3x3+ cube to fill the rest of the hole in... It's like rockwool dirt if u will...

http://www.babygreenthumb.com/p-122-safe-plastic-numbers-guide.aspx

Here we go, safe plastics. Maybe next grow ill just to Polypropylene.

Looks like you can get Polypropylene pellets online pretty easy, just need to find the larger grain.

I literally stopped drinking bottled water cuz I don't trust the effects of plastic especially when you let a bottle or pallet of cases of water sit in the sun and you get a leaching effect going on.... Safe plastic is like clean coal.... Hemp for the muther-fuckin win... It really is sad how our whole economy could be changed by hemp... When there's a product that can be made domestically that would eliminate a good majority chunk of pollution through manufacturing or lack of, and not only put Americans to work in every industry.... You really gotta wonder how much of the tin foil helmet people are wrong...

I just opened a letter yesterday addressed to my families company that was from the cell provider that has a tower on our property and the letter was basically a "we ain't responsible" for anyone that ends up with brain cancer due to exposure from the major amount of microwave and massive RF output coming out of our antennas.......that have been in place on my property alone since the late 80's and have been upgraded constantly.... Thanks for getting round to letting us know....

Yeah the rockwool 'croutons' (i like that) sounds like a good way to go too. This current grow is mostly rockwool in my 3.5" cups, then just some hydroton at the top mostly to block light.

Oh man, that's an ominous sign as far as the letter from big mobile. Yea, all this shits slowly killing us. It does sound like as far as plastics tho, at least H/LDPE and PP will do it slower. I tried to use some hemp string for something in my last grow, but it just got eaten up entirely by something in the water. Glass is probably the best, thinking the marble approach might be pretty good.

Foam pipe collars might work.
Ah yes, the pool noodle. Wonder what type of plastic those are. I know they use foam for the lettuce rafts, gotta be some safe foam out there.

I have gone back to hydroton. Rockwool was adding weeks to my grow time, seemed to make early veg take FOREVER....

At this point I decided the hydroton aint too expensive to just burn up.... I don't even try to recycle it atm, cuz I am lazy... Eventually I will have a wash tub or 2 in the grow room, just for such things... I feel the hydroton offers the best amount of oxygen, and water, while doing the actually important work..... blocking light out of the root zone.

I have found any plant greater than 10 inches tips. This way needs some, sort of anchoring system.
I had that problem too. When they start tipping, i tape a tomato cage with the legs cut off to the lid. Then the plant can lean on the inside of the cage and they stay up straight.

I use 3.5" pots, all my plants but one have tipped so far lol. I guess I don't care much so far. As long as it's not pinching or cutting into things.

It did flood my fucking tent yesterday tho, knocked irrigation loose. Fun to deal with in the freezing

Itd be nice for my dwc screen lids in my signature.

Only reason I know this I clone and start seeds this way with 2" netcups and collars and usually I transport my seeds before they tip, but ive had quite a few clones falling out of the cloner or tipping to a point my sprayers are spraying water out the openings.

I agree... I like the idea of rockwool as an alternative if I needed more water retention because I couldn't water as frequently as I can using hydroton, I don't know why I would be in that position but i guess if less waterings is beneficial to your grow, rockwool is the ticket... I like the ability to flood more times per day and get more fresh o2 in the root zone but I doubt using rockwool and flooding half as many times as I can with hydroton would be a game changer as much as preference...

I like the grow stones too.... I just started running flood tables/growing hydroponically recently... but I started out running 1 bag of hydroton and 1 bag of grow stones mixed and then a few times I couldn't get grow stones so now when I need more medium I'll alternate buying a bag of gs's and then a bag of hydroton and mix as I go along and recycle it... just some variety I guess...

To the question at hand I liked growstones a lot.

But they are very dusty. The dust is more, harmful to breath in than hydroton IMO.

That's why you never dump the bag before running water through them... poke a bunch of holes with a pen sized apparatus that's not gonna break and leak ink all over your grow stones as you stab away like the shower scene in psycho at the bottom 1/3 of the bag, then cut the top off the bag (all this with the bag sitting in a tub or slop sink) and run water through with a hose or tub spout (the tub spout is tough, u gotta keep moving the bag around) and just keep running water through until it comes out clear... from there dump it into a container and treat it how you would prior to use; and your good... same goes for hydroton... works lovely...
