Is the chlorine from tap water REALLY that bad?

I think the subject is "Does the low level of chlorine in all municipal water harm plants?" So it doesn't matter that your water is different from his, both of your waters will have varying amounts of chlorine. You're right that the levels are different, but it is possible to answer the question in a general manner.

I would say "No, the low levels of chlorine in tap water aren't likely to harm your plants but the other dissolved minerals might. If you are worried about harming the beneficial bacteria in your soil you can evaporate the chlorine out by letting the water sit in an open container for a day or two or by having an air-pump pump air through an airstone in the water for an hour or two or by boiling the water and letting it return to room temperature. I'm not sure how important beneficial bacteria are to hydroponic grows like flood/drain or DWC, but if I knew I had tap water with low ppm I wouldn't even bother to evaporate the chlorine out. It might even help to prevent root rot. I don't know that for sure, but that would be my guess."
thanks you! much obliged! i have 30ppm out of my tap :) :hump:. so im not worried about anything else besides maybe chlorine, thats why i asked the question. but i dont think i will worry much because of the info you guys have shared with me. it would be one thing if i was going organic but im not. ty for the nice words, im glad your not on the rag.:mrgreen:

You never had a question see above and your like 3 post aft this said keep debating people.....you didnt want someone to relay to you in a nice way as per your last post to me that any answers to questions...you wanted to debate the topic, I simply point out that its not really a debateable topic and then you start making accusations about my kindness then sugarcoat that but telling the next guy your glad he isnt on the rag? REALLY ....its cute how you play off in the end that you were just asking a question and I was such a bitch and wouldnt help you in a polite way.

^^my title^^

"so im referring to just to the chlorine aspect of the tap water and nothing else... thanks for your input! :P "

^^third post^^

look, im sure your a nice person. im glad your interested in my thread:mrgreen:. i guess i just got offended. it made me mad when you said i should move my thread to another location, implying that my question was not genuine, your "get it?", shouting at me that "ITS DIFFERENT EVERWHERE", and just i felt an overall animosity from you from your first post. im not here to argue with ppl, i dont need any more problems in my life right now.

its not right for me to call names and put you down, sorry for that.

im sorry that i said that we should debate an undebatable subject, im not that smart, i guess, otherwise i would have know. your right, im wrong, i should probably just end this thread then? what do you suggest i do?
i dont know any local growers, thats why i come here for my info because the number one rule of growing security is dont tell anyone otherwise you can jeopardizes your freedom. once again, sorry for my ignorance and thanks for correcting me. maybe i need to bongsmilie

I just had to say my tap water is probably around 9 ph . . when testing it almost glows teal without ph down.

So your results will vary for tap water - just check ph.

And personally I let my water sit out in between waterings (I fill up my watering can *after* watering). Just a simply precaution if chlorine does actually matter.

maybe i should have put it in toke and talk, i just figured it was general growing information plus there is more ppl in here too.

I love the guys who will not filter tap water, but collect rainwater in one of those toxic rubbermade plastic trash cans...which toxins do you prefer...I myself don't even inhale

Chlorine will evaporate out of the tap water pretty quickly in an open container. But most municipalities now add chloramine. Which does not evaporate out.

The ppm's in most tap municipal processed tap water is too low to hurt plants whether chlorine or chloramine.

We let the water sit out so it can rise closer to room temperature as to not shock the roots.

I strongly suggest a water test to know how to deal with your own water for your garden.

Alkalinity is the most important thing to understand. Ph is not the issue. What is causing it is.

And cannabis utilizes a few ppm of chlorine as a trace element.

It depends imo, chlorine and whatever else may be in your tap water means nothing if you're growing in soil. I'd think it may actually be helpful in hydro, all I read about is people adding H2O2 or pool shock to their hydro water, ph of course is important in hydro but it's not even a word in a soil grower's vocabulary.

Here's another perspective for soil growers and water quality. Many of us outdoor growers have used puddles, lake/pond water, collected rain water, anything we can get our hands on and don't have to carry to remote grow locations. Plants grow just as well with that water.

My area has really high chlorine in the water, strong enough you can smell it out of the tap, smells like a pool that was just shocked. These 2x 15gal plants were grown with tap water straight out of the hose and Jack's Citrus, nothing else all the way through to harvest. Never checked ph, let the water sit or filtered it in any way. They eventually pulled 29 zips dry between them.

I moved here 5 years ago. And I actually have a well with really good water. Gotta have a deep well here for quality.

But there was chlorine in the water in my last neighborhood and I used it out of the tap on summer when it was not too cold.

Yeah I had some in my last house on a well but for drinking water/coffee/tea I just have one of those Brita jugs which does the trick. Everything else gets pool shocked water - lol

Bonsai growing for stealth - lol Funny thing came out yesterday too, the "task force" that put the recommendations together for legalization in Canada is recommending a 4 plant rec limit and 40" (100cm) height restrictions. I have some practice, I'm good ;)
