those little hps bulbs arent very efficient. for the cost of a bulb id buy 5 of the 14W 2700K A19 LED bulbs from home depot which are about as efficient and will last a long time

Guess im starting off but not much of a budget, this is my new hobby so ill throw money at it. No venting, in a wide open room above a garage far from other houses.
Good luck bro, what are the dimensions of the room you are growing in so we can get a sense of how much area you need to cover, also is your room ventilated and insulated?

a 600 or 1000w hps would cover that good for cheap, or you can go with LEDs if you are into that but they will cost more.

So LED is the best..? For vegetative and budding/flowering stage with highest yield?
At your scale. Yes. LEDs are best. That doesen't mean they don't have any disadvantages over HPS or other light sources.

HPS and Sunlight are cheaper. HPS over time is more expensive however.. I assume you prob need 600w in a 4x4 for solid ppfd#'s versus 8x cxb 3590 @1400ma.

About $200 for HPS light and reflector. $40 for fan exhaust for that air cooled hood, connecotrs, etc. .. +650 watts of juice or so.
ABout $450 for those crees if you handbuild. Approx 450 w. -> no blower, no reflector, no bulbs to change, no glass to clean, considerably more amount of light gets to your plants via LEDs- and its better imo because you can get closer. Leds run so cool they will bleach plants before they burn. @.23kw cents/hr that 200 watts translates to about $$8-12/month on elec savings.

Other savings:
How often do you change your HPS bulb? etc. etc. LEDs and Ballasts should last at least 8 years. HPS? Varies dramatically.

Check out cobkits website. Hes got great stuff.

If I were you: run your hps into the ground or sell it and save up for led.

GL HF!
