running seeds vs keepers and clones

Seeds vs Clones, can be summed up with one simple question. What are your goals?

If you like strain hunting, popping seeds is fun. If you're into output and/or have already found your nirvana strain, go with clones.
Adding to the above... If you do not mind variety go with seeds.

To answer the original question... I am currently growing from seeds. I do not have the extra space to keep a dedicated vegetative tent and dedicated flowering tent.

I'm running four unfamiliar strains in a new setup this year. All from seeds, 12 each (=48 plants), with the first run just finishing up.

I'm looking for one pheno of each strain but won't keep moms. I took a half dozen clones of each first time around to be safe (= 288 plants looked at).

Onto only the third generation of clones and it's easy to see the number of plants that I've already juggled whilst looking for keepers.

I keep good notes and track every plant back to the original seed, but won't make a call until 2 or 3 runs.

A game of numbers, and a long one.

It's a complicated start but I know I will be happy when I can finally stabilize with just the four predictable phenos.

Of course the door will always be open on a new seed strain and the challenges and beauty that comes with it :bigjoint:

Clones are for cones, seeds are for breeds.
Only reason i ever had seeds was to breed whatever characteristics were desired.
Clones are for production and as tyystikk originally stated for consistency/uniformity.

Unless you have the time to fully mature a plant from seed(and that's not necessarily just long enough to flower it) there's no reason not to go from clones, in my mind. You can flower out at any time, any size, and its already fully mature/potent.

I like running from seed to find keepers. In my experience the really great keepers most guys hold pretty tight unless you have something special to offer. Generally the things everyone else already has are not enough. So I run my seeds, find my keepers and it's in turn gotten me access to some really great cuts. It's all a balance IMO.

I like growing from seeds , searching for a special pheno. I only clone my own mothers.... never bringing someone else's clones to my grow.... less chance of getting bugs.

I run no seeds, just clones. I don't keep moms either, I just take cuts when I train them. No long waits while they germ n grow, no males, no broken strains, no bad phenos, NO HERMS. Total consistency so changes in the rest of the op can be better controlled and quantified.

As far as variety goes, I am very fortunate to have people offer me clones of their favorites all the time- I'd have hundreds if I accepted them all! Many of these are expertly hunted prime genos of their strain, others are just personal favorites and standouts.

I really don't feel like I'm lacking for diversity, performance or modernity in my stable of genetics.
willing to pay it forward... lol

That has a lot to do with tolerance.

Lots of strains will get you ripped but you need to have a low tolerance to get that high.
