I've read some studies and what not about an argument about cannabis having a "tap root".If you have rocky or poorly drained soil, you may be forced to use an above ground pot. Since I live in the sandhills, I always put them in the ground. You can still use your soil mix. Just dig out how ever big of a hole you want.
Remember wider is more important than deeper.
In the course of that I learned it has secondary and third root systems.
The main root goes deep. Sometime twice the height of the plant in debth.
The next two sets if roots grow horizontal and catch run off.
Though I agree wider than deeper. Though I wouldn't object to a deeper hole if possible.
