DIY Duct Silencer!

Duct silencer by GrowZillaZoo

Shopping list: Menards

1. 4'x8" sonnit tube. Aka round concrete form tube.
2. 4 - 8" to 6" duct reducers
3. Chicken wire 4'x5'
4. Insulation or bedding foam.
5. Decent 2" screws.
6. Silver duct tape or caulk.

This will be enough for 2 silencers!

Build:

1.Cut tube in half, clean even cut.

2.Take chicken wire an make 6" round tube.
36" long.

3.Wrap your insulation around the wire.
I used a 6" pipe and slipped it thru.

Insert your insulation wrapped chicken wire in to the sonnit tube. Make sure it is a nice snug fit.

Slip reducers over each end and screw them in 4-6 screws per side.

Duct tape seam or caulk so no air slips by.

I'm painting mine silver.

Now you have 2 silencers for around $60.00 much cheaper then anything I've found pre made.

Thanks zoo, sometimes written word is easily mis-taken, whats meant funny can be read as snarky.

I quieted a fan once, an inline one, by leaving it in box, filling the box with spray foam. I then wrapped the box w metalic coated styrofoam and used metalic plenum tape to wrap corners n such to give it all a clean look. Worked awesome, would work even better if i attached it to a rig like you made...

I'd be concerned about the fan getting too hot.. this is just like the silencers you can buy from Phat Filter if you used egg create foam.

Next I'm building an enclosed box for the fan as well. The one I've got is super loud. It sounds like a jet turbine its an 8" I forgot the brand name atm but it's a high cfm one.

Plus I'll be adding in the intake filter and output carbon filter plus I'm using insulated 8" flexible duct pipe. I'm betting it'll sound like the dryer exhaust by the time it's all hooked up.
