Looking at the cob lighting but very expensive to get started
Looking into the diy seems like everyone has an opinion on what works best see the cree led bit then u look on ebay and there half the price just not brand name or what about the full spectrum cob why not use that instad of the 3k ? I could build one in the matter of a day but would really like more info on the lighting part

If you can build one, do it. Check the led sub forum. You can miss with Cree cobs against HPS. You can buy some China panels that are better than HPS though I wouldn't recommend it. 3070 are cheap these days...

Well a decent 1000 w digital ballast is going to run you $200-250 A hood another $150 and a bulb is $100 say a even $500 Now for $100 more your into cob leds and its more efficient plus your saving on the electricity.
I switched over to cobs in my flower room and with the hps I needed 70A just to turn the lights on. Now with the cobs I need 40A even if my yield stays the same Im saving a good $125-150 a month in electric I already see a difference in my bill. The upfront cost is a little more but your saving over the long run.
I would look at the citizens or the luminus 22 they are cheaper and more efficient than cree an example a 4x4 area 12 cree 3590 @1,4A = 10 citizen 1818@ 1.4A cree cobs are $35 each and citizen are $22
and stay away from fleebay get name brand cobs you will thank yourself later for it.

What would be a good driver to power 5 of the citizen ? Or would i have to only power 3-4 witht he driver ?

I run a single soil tek ballast run to a Y splitter to 2-600W bulbs. I think 2-600W are better than 1-1000W light.

You should take a look at Quantum Boards. they are among the best LEDs right now.

Will that splitter work on any 1000 watt digital ballast ?

its a decent light but you will also need 6k btu of cooling for hanging that light. I ran 4 gavita before and they are heaters.

What would be a good driver to power 5 of the citizen ? Or would i have to only power 3-4 witht he driver ?
slow down because one min your thinking of putting 1000w open hood and then ask about 5 cobs that will not cover the same area. ITs not knowing what your goals are for the grow or growing style if you add co2 or not there are several other factors that will make changes in your decision on the number of cobs or how hard to drive them.
I know the area is 4x6x8 this is how i look at it. First thing is to figure out a cob to use. I will use the diy cob calculator for the numbers it just makes it easier to change cobs.
These are all running 1.4 A
citi 1212 20= 882 ppfd $14.75 ea $295
luminus 22 14= 908 ppfd $19 $266
cree 3590 17=878 ppfd $35 $595
Quantum board 6 $75 $475

That doesnt include drivers heat sinks holders or reflectors if you want them.... each have its pros and cons

I am really interested in the cobs. Thinking about just doing a full bar. I would probably go with the citizen.
Hlg185h-c-1400b. Im trying to understand the math that goes into selcting your driver just more off a builder not an engineer i can get aluminum sheeting at cost and seen few builds with this same style of flat aluminuim.

The driver I would suggest is the EGL-240-54 now choose a model dimming or not or smart dimming they are $10 cheaper per driver over the hlg but can only run them on 240v also to run 15 cobs total you would need 5 drivers or go with a bigger driver.
elg-240-54 puts out 4.5A / 3 = 1.5A each cob it also give you the option of upgrading to 2.2A per cob if you choose to do so in the future. just put 2 cobs per driver

You know the cob you want to use the data sheet will tell you the min and max voltage also the amperage it can run now you want to run them at 1.4A time to do the math
