So....

My second round of the Romulan did much better it terms of health through flowering. I chased a cal/mag deficiency for weeks and stayed ahead of it until week 6 when it started to catch up to me. But... even so, it seems this yield didn't do as well as the last run. That's unconfirmed as yet because I don't have a dry weight. But by appearances.... while the bud size is bigger there seems to be less buds... so maybe it balances out in the end. Regardless, this strain is a very, very low yielder. Fine smoke, but not worth the time for the yield.

Another thing I noticed was brown roots on this run too, same as the last one. I have only suffered this when I have had lock out due to salt build up, which is what happened too my last run of this strain. All my other runs of all strains finished with nice white roots. Anyway, this time it seems the brown roots may be due to the light intensity leading to nutrient probs. Have to do some more reading on that.

Indeed. And rock solid down to the bottom buds again. But i wonder what i might have left on the table with the brown roots. Was likely significant...but even so this strain is just a light yielder.

As i said before i need to run a familiar strain to really dial in on these lights. So... Northern lights up next. ☺

Haven't run that strain, but NL should pull some weight with the right pheno. They look pretty good, not sure they would have pulled a lot more one way or another. Good luck on the next run.

So I can't figure out where I'm going wrong...

I've done two rounds with my COBs and my yields are no where near what I hoped. I consider myself an experienced grower, but it seems I've had trouble dialing in the COBs. I've read many times here that 1 gram per watt should be easy, but I've come no where close to that...

So maybe if I offer some detail I can get some tips?

First COB Run:

Mother from seed grown under HPS.
Cloned in a bubble cloner under a T5.
Once rooted and planted the clones vegged under HPS for 34 days.
(promix mychrohazea + AN nutes)
8 plants in 3.5 gal pots flowered in two adjacent 4X4 spaces, under 4 Tasty's LED T4-2100s (2 for each 4X4 space).
Top colas were 12" under the lights. One cola bleached a bit.
Growth stalled in week 4. Salt build up likely, as multiple nute deficiencies presented themselves.
Harvest after 54 days, yield 28 ounces. or .58 grams per watt.

Second COB run:

Took clones from same mother, but it was kept under T5s.
Cloned in rapid rooters.
Once rooted and planted vegged under COBs for 28 days.
Same soil/nutes
Flowered same as above.
Top colas were 18" below lights (as I had read that light intensity may have been part of my probs the first run, with nute deficiencies.
Growth was much healthier than the first run and did not stall, but I did chase what I believed was a cal/mag deficiency, but seemed to stay ahead of it.
That deficiency caught up to me in week 6.
Harvest at Day 57; yield 23 ounces or .48 gramps per watt.

Temps and humidty for both runs were rock steady 74-79f and 50% RH until week 5, then about 35%-40% wk 5 to 8.

Inspection of the roots for both grows showed a lot of brown... indicating problems.

But I can't figure it out. I now doubt a little that my second run had cal/mag probs because the water here is so high in both. But maybe. I doubt it was salt build up since I flushed well in week 3 (regular habit).

Anyway... any suggestions would be appreciated to improve my COB growing skills.

Brown roots are a sign of root rot, i'd recommend using some hygrozyme , sensizyme or cannazyme to clear that up. Happy growing.

Nearly two months from the flip. Mystery bean from my collection of randoms.
Grown under 90w of not so cheap chinese cob. And in 28L of organic composted soil.

She's got about 13 heads. And a whole lotta buddage growing up the stems. No trichs just yet though. Hope they start coming in soon.

She's a foot tall. And about the same in width too.

I would say bigger pots, what ppm are you running ? I think they want more food and light. I am close to 1500ppm for nutrients and my water is about 3-400. I run with some reflectors and some bare, the bare ones I can run 6-8” from the tops. Using a crappy phone app I set them around 100,000 lux from the tops. What medium are you using, is it holding too much water (brown roots) ? What strain are you running that finishes so early ? is it suppose to be a heavy yielder ? I am at day 58 using my new room/setup, I will check back in a few weeks with a gram/watt results. I am also chasing cal/mag issues with these lights.

So. Each tent had 14 gallons of promix and produced 14 oz of bud? There is your limiting factor.
No no.
8 x 3.5 gals = 28 gals of promix. In a 4 x9 space that i run as 2 4x4s.
If ive had a run with no mistakes i usually yield 40 to 48 zips under hps in that space...

Running about 600 to 1400 ppms. I feed-feed-water, with the water just being plain with cal/mag added only, which comes in at about 600ppm. This style helped protect against salt build up under hps but... didnt use cal/mag at all so water was about 300ish.

Promix....the pots shouldnt be holding water... good drainage. Ive always been good with that.

It is obvious by the density of the bud all the way down and the brittleness that these cobs and the intensity of their light have changed growth on a molecular level... i wonder... is it cal/mag probs we are chasing or just somthing that appears like cal/mag probs?

I wonder if maybe the light intensity is upping the co2 requirement?

What about some dimmers to lessen the intensity of the lights?
