My brother in law is RCMP, I've had this discussion many time. I asked him about defending your home with a shotgun with non lethal rounds (rubber or bean bags). If I shot an intruder in my home I would be charged with a more serious offence than the intruder, lethal round or not. His advice was to have a base ball bat and mitt handy in your house and vehicle. Your better off defending your self with a bat than a gun, the mitt nearby will defer the intent that your primary use for the bat is defence.Ps I own several restricted and non restricted firearms.Itsme.

Flame Throwers are a nice but bulky alternative to domestic 'weapons'

I store my guns in a gun safe with trigger locks inside a locked and dead bolted room, I have a bat under my bed and one hidden by my front and back door. Batters up!.......

Actually it working out pretty good, te accidental deaths have dropped partially cause when you get your permit, you are taught what to do etc etc. Knock on wood we haven't had a problem.

My personal feeling is all about teaching gun safety to children and adults as well. Small children from the age of 3 to 7 or 8, houldn't really see a gun and know whats its for, beyond that, you can start teach with an adult usually with a pellet gun and a bb gun, when you hit 13 then you get to know the real thing. For my kids, I've always told them before you use a gun always use your head first, this is the last resort and you can bring anything back if you make a mistake......we as parents if we decide to go shooting need to teach that to the younger generation and so on

Very few break-in's in Canada are more than an attempt at property theft. Yes that is quite dismaying in itself. But there is little need in Canada for keeping a weapon loaded and handy. Unless of course somebody has your number and you live in that world of near violence. As much as I'd like to hurt the break in guy, I'd hate to shoot somebody for that alone. Scare em off with the gun...sure why not. If threatened by violence well of course then self defense become needed. But could be too late to help yourself at that point.
More home invasions are fire arms related than break and enters. And most home invasions are not random either. It's usually targeted at know valuables or a certain individual being there. Not always, but mostly. Home invasion outside of our largest cities is rare in Canada.
