Hmm can't say I have really looked into that, sometimes I'll not go in the tent for a few days and I'll notice considerably growth, I'd say you're about right with coco being the middle ground between soil and dwc, have tried dwc myself and failed with root rot, so I went back to coco and have stuck ever since.
Fair point on the fabric pots looking untidy I'll agree on that but they out perform plastic pots by a country mile.
No problem adding the drainage to the next 're pot it will help in flower.
I was once in your boat just starting with coco, I asked all sorts of silly questions, but once you know what works and what doesn't you'll have fun growing in coco.
What do you find better about growing in coco compared to soil?
