Hi .I have a few plants on the go ...4 ... about 9 weeks old . flipped to 12.12..two days ago iv noticed the 2 bigger ones are drinking more water I gave them about a ltr and half of water each 2 days ago and today the pots are light. I gave them enough for run off. I left them sat in the run off for 10 mins and that to were gone. I checked them today and again light so I just poured about quarter a ltr in the tray and bang that's gone .. is this normal. I'll take more pics later when I go re check but the pic ere is 2 weeks ago befor flip . there in 3 gallon pots that I drilled air holes in to give better air circulation to roots

Have you ever notice if the soil is dry, the water will run off straight out the pot before it even saturated your soil. I normally slowly pour my water and let her sit and continue to the next gal, then make my way back for a second cup of water each. However, your gal just may be drinking alot because she's growing. I so notice if my room temp is high, my girls will drink much quicker. Good luck.

if you grow in hydroton its even worse, they dont stop drinking ! lol

what are you growing in?
if its mixed nicely it will drain correctly, not too slow, not too fast.
fill a pot with the substrate dry, feel the weight?
now add one fourth the volume, in water. feel the weight?
repeat, but only when its light again.

tired of watering all the time? grow in bigger pots

there in a compost soil that has worm casting already added . I added some vermiculite and perlite with a tiny bit of coco coir. I don't pour loads on I pour enough to wet the top and let it seep into soil then pour more .and keep doing this till I get a run off

That's a good thing, and normal. When you flip them to flower they'll start stretching, that means very fast vegetative growth for the first couple of weeks. They'll need/drink more water during that period and basically through the rest of the flowering cycle if they're healthy, Once the buds set and start fattening they take a lot of water.

Of course as already mentioned, there are other factors like heat, air circulation etc. that will also not necessarily cause them to drink more but may evaporate water away on top of the plants needing more.

I am in the UK .. I have a 1.2x1.2x2mtr tent .600watt hps light. .cool tube.. top of the tent I have a 6inch rvk fan and large carbon filter . I have an oscillator fan in a corner at the bottom blowing slightly upwards and a small clip on fan to the right half way up. to the cool tube I have a 4 inch intake fan blowing cold air on the bulb but I blow the cooled heat inside the tent not out this keeps temp at 77.8f at canopy and 79 to 81f at Base I have a 4 inch ducting connectedto the bottom port hole and going to an open window for fresh air intake. when lights are out I have a small oil filled radiator that clicks on as lights go out

Your temps is about the same as mines. I did notice my gals drink more in flowering. I feed a gallon per plant and get great results with a month veg.

Yeah will be big in 3gal pots after the stretch so they'll likely need watering every other day. I give them ~1L per gallon of soil every other day. I have a run going right now, the shorter one's towards the front that are 6x 3gal and have to water them every other night at that rate. I also have a lot of air movement in the room which will have an effect, specially with the fabric pots which is all I run them in. Some phenos drink faster or slower, can be quite a difference when you're running mixed strains/phenos.

I run a mix of strains, there's 6x strains, 8 phenos in there. The lanky sativas at the back are in 5gal and just about every other day now as well. I ran these in smaller pots on purpose. I find if I size the plant to be larger than normal for the pot, when I water every other day I'm getting better yields. Some of those phenos will pull a QP which is not bad in a 3gal pot.

I am just wondering if I should now remove the ties I hold branches down with and let them do there thing I'll take a few pics later and post them ere see what you think

If its drinking loads and asking for more feel free to water again.
Mine need watering every day as they grow they ask for more.
Light pots = water

They definately drink more in flower. I can run my 5 gals dwc's in veg for 4-5 days before needing to top up. In flower they need to be topped up almost daily. My soil plants take 1+L every few days in veg, in flower they drink almost 2L a day. You gotta figure they almost double in size in flower, so their water needs will about double.

Outdoors my sativas use a bucket of water a day. About equal to the volume of soil they are in.
It does get damn hot here though.

NOBODY caught this?

I left them sat in the run off for 10 mins
NOT a good idea!

If your doing synthetic feeding. That run off contains concentrated forms of things you don't want that plant to sit in.....You'll hit problems down the road. One's that will be hard to fix properly.

I water a metered amount daily. I get good O2 to the roots that way. I can also control feeding better (In my opinion).

My plants in 3 gallon pots are simply there to grow into the 5 or 7's and then they get flipped and finish...A plant at 3-4 ft should be taking in 4 cups or a qt of feed everyday and not get run off - or very little that doesn't even reach the bottom of the pot - so it doesn't take it back in. A 4 ft plant is close to up potting for finish - if the strain shows that it's roots are building up - I'll go to a 5 and finish in a 7.
