It depends on what type of furnace you have, oil burners need an annual tune-up.A gas forced air really only needs a basic look over, change filters, change batteries in thermostat.Check the blower wheel for excess build up and clean the flame detector.

If your central AC isn't as cold as it should be call service guy. I had a service man out to recharge my "Freon" and he saw my 6' plants in the furnace room lol... I just said I'm medical and nothing else was said. Most the stuff you can do as the poster above me mentioned.

1) Contractors are hired to do a job. 99% don't care what you do in your free time
2) manufacturers recommend every year, so do I. being cold sucks.
3) definitely have the A/C checked annually if your grow room gets warmer than your ambient house temp. Don't pay more in electric than you need to just because your A/C unit isn't running efficiently

nmibud had it mostly right. Although im not sure what kind of "excess build up" would be on the blower. It shouldn't have anything but a small bit of dust.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'm gonna try and ride another year out till I break everything down. Wish I could trust a hvac dude to look at my stuff

My geothermal system needs to be cleaned once a year and the filter I change every 6 months. Most forced air systems are the same general cleaning and a recharge every so often depending on where you live.

Even if you don’t suspect any problems with your air conditioning unit, heating and cooling experts say it’s a good idea to have it inspected, serviced and cleaned once a year — ideally in the spring — to ensure it operates at peak energy efficiency and is ready to cool your house during the months you need it most.

As your HVAC system runs, it accumulates dust and dirt in key areas that affect its efficiency, like the condensing coils and air filters. Left unchecked, your A/C system can lose 5 percent of its operating efficiency each year because of this buildup, meaning it can’t cool your house as capably as it could if it were clean.
