Topping

This will be my third grow outdoors in the ground legally here in Oregon. The first grow resulted in lots of huge buds. Last year I topped the heck out of my plants and had a lot of bud, but much smaller. We also had a cooler and wet fall last year. Would topping too much cause this smaller bud size? There were a lot more of them just smaller, or maybe it was the cooler weather the last month of bloom.

I'm from OR I personally would only recommend topping them if you do it early in the season and veg them indoors. At this point unless you've already been vegging, I would say leave them. Everyone does things different tho just my opinion. (For outdoor)

What strain U doing?

Some want more but smaller buds so they are not as prone to mold. They will top right up until a couple weeks before stretch. This is what I did back in the day. But then I was always out of smoke by summertime, and I was wanting to smoke the tops.

I'm going to top less this year. I lost several plants last season to splitting where the first top was. Or I might still top, just wrap a loop or two of duct tape around the two branches before they get heavy with bud.

But if the two BST1's {that were covered by BST2's} had not been split by a dinky little hurricane, the new strains would not have been named Hurricane Head.

Just lost my place here in Cali, and thinking of relocating to Oregon, any suggestions on where in Oregon to grow/buy property?

Tmb, sorry you are having to move. I think @Humanrob @Fogdog and @slow drawl are from that neck of the woods. They might have some insight into your situation.
Thanks for the good words my friend.....
Need to get shit wrapped up here, then off to Alaska the month of July, then to Oregon in August to visit a few farms, see the full solar eclipse on August 21st, and look at real estate to buy.

All you Oregon boys, any suggestions on where to buy in Oregon, i'm all ears.

Sounds like a good summer. That eclipse is going to be cool as hell.

It depends on your priorities. If growing cannabis outdoors is your #1 goal, most of the big growers I've heard about are in southern Oregon, for instance radiating outwards from Ashland. One thing I'm sure you'll hear if you haven't already, is that southern Oregon has water rights issues. It's been a decade since I researched this, but as I recall you can buy land but you don't necessarily have the right to drill a well on your own land. I think you have to apply for a permit, and you can be denied. I'm sure there's more to it, but its something to look into, I think they operate on the notion that underground aquifers are common/county property like (above ground) rivers.

A friend once took me on a Google satellite tour of grows outside of Ashland, you just follow major roads to smaller ones into the hills, and then you can see the fields of neatly planted rows of cannabis, all over the place. This was a couple of years ago before recreational became legal, so you could always tell it was cannabis because the number was always divisible by 6 (number of plants per medical card).

Like @sandhill larry said, you are less likely to get bud rot with more smaller buds than with fewer larger ones. Those big dense colas can trap a LOT of moisture. Also, if we're having a bad worm season (like we did last year), they won't hit all of your buds, but if you were letting your girls from seed "christmas tree" and put a lot of its energy into one central cola, if that puppy get's hit with worms that would totally impact your final output.

When I grow from seeds I only top one or two times, and I do it pretty early on long before anything I'm removing is thick or woody. I try to shape them young, and then leave the tops alone. All my subsequent trimming is around removing lower branches and leaves and thinning things out for good air movement. I'm not growing a cash crop, so my advice might not be best if you are looking for the highest possible output. I'm just trying to make it through the season.

Stay away from Medford, they are pretty hostile to growing. South west Oregon, away from the ocean, climate is dryer and longer, warmer season but colder in winter. I live in mid-Willamette Valley and find (along with rob) that a greenhouse is necessary for the last month to finish the grow right.

The Oregon market is small compared to California. Lots of competition is pushing prices down. This was intended and an objective of the bill that we passed in order to drive down the black market.

Thank you, that makes sense.

If you wanna move to oregon it just matters what your trying to do like stated before. If growing bud full time is your priority then probably any little city will do here. Remember that growing is legal here (4 plants rec) so there isn't much market for selling it. I prefer cities near the i5 interstate as I only produce for personal consumption and friends while making my money in a "real job" Lol. If I were to relocate there s a city called st Paul oregon that has real cheap land and is less than 1 hour from portland. (Portland is by far the biggest city in oregon)

I dug up a picture from 2013 of a Super Lemon Haze plant I grew. She was topped once, at six nodes high I topped her to the third node. From there, I practiced a bit of LST on the new tops. This is what came from that.
Out of curiosity how deep did u dig that hole? And are you in oregon? Nice plant !!!

Sorry to hear the news of you having to move TMB, though you might be better off here in Or in the end.
I think with your plans to visit in Aug you'll get a good Idea where you might want to plant yourself. Definitely the southern parts for a better growing season. Good luck with your journey :peace:

Yeah..topping helps to keep the buds smaller and our fall weather really slows shit down as well.
I always top my plants, a couple times anyway. To many issues with mold in the big thick buds.
