Light Bulb Bud Dryer

AS most of you know i am a big fan of ABF kiss-ass and try as i might to copy his grow and teachings i just could not understand his bud dryer set up. https://www.rollitup.org/harvesting-curing/8973-bud-dryer-manicured-smoke-3-a.html

I know he says its easy but I can be a little slow and i don't understand half the things he is saying like WTF is an OHM???? I needed to build one but I was looking for a heat source that I could use. I was changing out a light bulb and burnt my fingers and i light bulb went off. LOL Do you like the pun there?

SO i went to the big orange store and pick up a few things and off I started. Using a ceramic light socket a 6 in HVAC connector a dimmer switch a 150w bulb, coffee can and a couple of 4 in fans I started building.

I ran this for 4 hrs last night and right out of the gate I am not lying, once it warmed up it was 84 degrees and 25 % humidity the whole time. From top to bottom on the sides with in a degree of each other!

If you have questions you what to do. write them down and sent it.

I used scrap pieces of flooring to regulate the air . The box is to force the air up and around though the fan.

Totally fuckin' brilliant, nice work. :)

I do have one question, tho- how does air flow through your unit?

As you see with mine, air is heated and drawn right through the buds on the racks:

I LOVE your racks. I hate the hanging racks in mine as I have to hold it in the air with one hand and load it with the other.

Well done. :)

Wow those are some really sophisticated drying cabs. Doesnt the heat and light affect the trichroms I always see in marijuana horticulture the book to never put a fan or excede certain temps and never ever put in direct light.

From what i am reading is that you have to keep the temps below 85 F 29 C there is no light because of the sheet blocking it. See pics.

Yes, you're quite right, excessive heat and exposure to light are no-nos for drying. However, there's not only no problem with air motion around drying buds, it is an effective strategy for preventing mould. Mould hates a draft.

My dryer (now in v2.0, details near end of that thread), which El Sparko has based his on, uses resistors on a heatsink to make heat. A thermostat is used to limit temp to 29C, above which THC begins to decompose into CBD & CBN.

Sparko's heater, while employing a light bulb, keeps light contained within a coffee can. I'm sure he can give you the rest of the detail. :)

I sorta see what's going on, looks like you're warming air in the bottom chamber then drawing up through these holes into the bud chamber, then exhausting through the top, right?

In the heater chamber, I see the lamp in the coffee can and a fan, is that fan drawing air in?

If you don't have one yet, all you'd need for precise temp control is a thermostat in the bud chamber which turns the lamp on and off.

Yes sorry about that I will try to explain that better in the post.

Yes the box warms the air and that is a fan you see in the bottom pulling air in. Yes i do need one but I was going to cheat fate and see just how much the temp fluctuates before buying one.

BTW, I think we mulled over use of an incandescent lamp in a coffee can as a heater once before. I did a few quick sketches...

I thought that sections of another coffee can, pop-rivetted to the can covering the lamp, would help with heat transfer into the air stream.

Yep your right !! Now i remember seeing that, but my burnt finger still jarred the thought into my head. I am wondering if i did do something like that i bet i could drop the wattage HUH? Any ideas how to get my can to look like that? I don't have a band saw ans snips would F it up.

I'd have tried it with tin snips, doesn't have to be pretty. ;) Probably just cut the can into eighths or something.

It'll be pretty steady but will be dependent upon the intake air temp. If intake air temp rises above what is is now while it's performing acceptably and you don't control it, it will wander above 29C.

This is amazing. So much effort put into this. I like it. How long did it take you to think of and construct this?

Yep !! i am going to hang it on my wall in my room grow work room and turn it on for a few days and see the highs and lows before i put my buds in it. No i am well aware of cooking my buds if that happens. I really cant afford any missteps it bad enough losing the second set of clones. But hey I am a better grower for it. Lesson learned. :weed:

Hey Al, I've seen your drier too. Both of them are amazing. I respect both of you a lot.

Thanks buddy ! I am a processor and i am VERY visual. i knew that i was going to use light so i went to home depot and walked around piecing it together. I had no idea of how i was going to set it up but i knew the pieces i needed. Brought it all home and started building the puzzle.

I have about 12 hrs into it and a lot of that was sitting and staring at an empty box. :weed:

Hahahaahahaha! That's what my problem would be. I'd sit there and stare at it. I bet if you gave me some cash and sent me to home depot, I could do wonders. Hahah. I always like making stuff :D
