Built it to suit your own taste but here is the basic requirements

The system Im using is not ideal its a junior kit really 5 gal buckets a 20 gal res 1-1/4 I.D pipe. Its nothing to write home about.

Buckets or solid totes etc to grow in plus one to mix nutes and extent system volume with

Rigid schedule 40 white poly pipe its normally used for irrigation and is thick wall that's what schedule 40 means.

Grommets to fit

A water pump to pump from the res to the buckets and a big ass air pump 60 Lpm or more and 15 or 20 air stones for it.

Then your ready to add 6 inch net pot lids and hydroton gravel

Drill the grommet holes 6 inches below the top of the buckets is my advice.
Buy good equipment good air pumps water pumps and grommets / pipe and success is more likely.

Ok. So is there a return tote tht all the nutrients drains back into, or does it just flow back into the same tote it came out of?

Also Is there water running frm the tops of each base of the plants through the medium and draining back down into the buckets? Just trying to figure out how the roots stay wet when they are smaller.

So many ways to do it take your pick , my pick was to use a 300 gph inline type pump to pump to the top of 2 of the buckets and let gravity drain them back to the single 20 gal res

I made it this way as it only needs one small inline pump that is in the res it could be mounted inline if the res was getting to warm but its been good.

The recirculating system runs on one 18w water pump plus a 20 lpm and 65 lpm air pump that consume 45w combined 63w total.
Tip ~ I find the 5 gal buckets sides are too close to the roots choose something bigger to avoid clogs and the subsequent flooding it causes.

Double important tip

Don't top feed with a dripper or spray or anything , instead water the clone / seedling in by hand once or twice a day no more IMO as it slows root development.

Check into it and see what is working for other people and whats not the proof is in the photos and growth rate. The more homework you do the better your system will turn out.

Mine is not ideal it cost about $400 with Pumps , the buckets and pipe diameter are the weak link one day will rebuilt with quality totes and 3 inch pipe

I dig this journal Altered State. I have a couple questions if you'd be so kind to indulge me. How to you go about draining your system? I built a 9 site (amateur) rdwc system before. It worked well but it was a pain to drain & clean. I also had to run the system through a chiller to keep the temp down. Do you use a chiller? The chilling and the draining pita I could deal with but the noise wound up being what turned me away. Looks mean though bud, no doubt. Props my man.

The draining goes fast first I pump the res out then use a hose and inline RV carbon filter to fill it to the top mix in the nutrients and its ready to flow back into the buckets.

When the fresh nutrients are mixed I slip the pump into each bucket under its lid and pump into a 3 gal pail takes 1 minute per bucket when its done I open up the res valve flood the buckets backward threw the drain and switch the circulation pump back on and its set to go.

I dont use a chiller instead I keep the reservoir out of the tent and aerators in a cool room it keeps the nutrients cool for me anyways.

I forgot to mention for cleaning I have been using a sterile res via Dutch master zone water conditioner that is keeping everything clean. Some of the organics I add in like Golden tree and humic acid can collect on things I just wipe it out with a cloth at nutrient change time if its building up.

Smoking or vaporizing Pesticides is absorbed by the system 7 x greater then if ingested.

What does this mean for us here Canada and the U.S ?

We are being sold cannabis that is to be smoked or vaporized with a FOOD rating

When ingesting food laced with pesticides much of it will be excreted in the urine / stool , but with Smoking/ vaporizing it goes straight into the blood and stays in the system forever collecting adding up.

Pesicides become ineffective if they were forced to be used in safe to smoke / vape levels.

This is science and they are ignoring it so the fast easy money comes in.
In Canada many police force members are hogging up to the trough right now already poisoning us with Pesticide laced weed.

Its a money grab and we are its sacrificial lamb if we let them

After looking at the options for a solvent-less extract Bubble Hash is the method I like best do to both the ease and safety of extraction so ordered 4 of the five gallon cheaper bubble bags to get me started.

Cool part is you can dab bubble hash or Rosin press it for cleaner dabbing.

Side note I did pick up that little rosin press for a $100 it should be here in a week its going to work good with my bud , its thick thick with trichomes.

I took it apart bagged the coil and it was ready to go in the res.



Its a deconstruction , to build one take one apart bag the coil and your done .



Thats its steady running wattage
It has a thermostat wire dipped in and is temperature controllable.

Its been cooling the systems 23. Imp gallons down at a rate of 1* F per hour . Its been running for 7 hours now and has brought the temp from 71 down to 64 *
I will put it on a timer now that I know it works thinking will try 1/2 hour on 1/2 hour off to help keep the compressor cooler and extend its life ( it got real hot running for those 7 hours )

I'll keep the thread posted with its use and any problems / fails or lack there of

So far so good



The chiller ran for 16 hours at 50% duty cycle that maintained the temp at 63.5* this is a little to cold so reset the timer to 1/2 hr on hour off for a 33% duty cycle.

Once the timer is approximately set I 'll adjust the thermostat to prevent over cooling and avoid excessive on off cycling.
Forgot a inline pump is in the res that I really should move out of the water .. it will drop the water temp by 3 degrees it raised it by that much.

This morning the res temp was 64.5* after 16 hrs of 1/2 hr on hour off.

8 weeks

First is the larger OG kush its leaves are beat up from that bad reaction it had 3 weeks ago but it continues to make bud despite its struggle.




The la specials are progressing slowly but surely , the middle plant turned into my favorite iits still about a week behind in bud devolpment but has the potential to exceed the og"s harvest size.







Its looking like it will be 3 weeks bare minumum before harvest.
The buds are under developed for their age but show good promise still.
Its been a uneventful two weeks changed the res a few days ago set the ppm to 850 the ph to 6

Picked up a four set of the 5 gal bubble bags this week and today is bubble hash making day , the first batch will be made with last harvest leaves and trim.

That about sums it up , I'll add some bubble hash photos later , Peace love and granola , be happy.

Refrigeration efficiency

When the chillers compressor first turns on it takes 7 to 10 minutes to reach its peak running efficiency , the timer is used to reduce the amount of start ups to the minimum while still maintaining a near constant temperature.

The systems nutrient temperature will be allowed to drift up a few degrees if it wants to but never down as too cold of nutrients will stunt growth with 65* being the low end of safe and really quite good.

Chiller monthly operating costs 108 watts cost $3 a month @ 8 hrs a day or $2 a month @ 6 hrs a day

After checking the temp at noon noticed the Coolers thermostat does not turn off at its warmest setting . So a new plan is in order, its staying between 64.5* and 65* So I reset the timer to 1 1/2 hrs off 1/2 hr On , a 25% duty cycle.

I guesstimate this will Raise the nutrient temperature by 1* to 1.5 degrees F

The Bubble Hash is made and has been put to the side to dry



Started the process off with a cooler full of pre chilled water.




Added the bags of ice then the Trim

Mixed it well


Drained and repeated




So I ran it threw twice then added the top leaf and ran it all twice again.



Used 3 gal buckets to drain the bubble bags filtered water into. When the cooler was emptied I then would dump the 3 gal buckets cold water back into the cooler and repeat the process.

Its so warm out it will dry fast enough on the plastic tray. Its suggested to use cardboard

Last night shaped the trich's into easy to handle shapes before placing them in the freezer overnight.



This morning they were grated to a powder like consistency and left to air dry for a few days.



Its highly suggested to spread the powder out more thoroughly to dry. As its currently 40% humidity and warm weather I opted to grate it into a thick collection.

Why should the hash be so well dried ?

To prevent mold is the #1 reason but also to give it good texture and to cure the trichomes making them more stony when using fresh wet bud as many people do although I did not .

Its getting close 3 or 4 days to harvest @ 13 weeks.
The LA Specials are thick thick in crystal the OG less so but still covered.

Today i busted the branch ends to kick the plants into self defense mode and more THC

This summer crop did not meet my expectations a few lock out issues caused by using potassium silicate ( I have that figured out now) combined with a lack of Co2 made for a smaller then hoped for harvest.

I estimate the plants are 10 to 12 oz each , these photos are from after I snapped the buds down

So far 4 days flush at 200 ppm 7 days @ about 80 ppm its now at 50 ppm with three days or more flush left.

The left la special and right side OG have rock hard super dense Buds the middle la special has the springy type of bud.The LA smell like lemon the OG like cigar smoke real strange its going to taste odd I bet.
Despite not reaching my goal ( I assume) I am happy with the results its still a good harvest.

I'll do a wet weigh on trim day and see what the numbers say.

Plants were chopped on friday , with the buds trimmed 20% of wet weight was 7.5 to 8.5 onces per plant.





Its the smallest harvest I have got since starting up again 2 years ago.

The quest continues for a pounder plant , I believe the high Co2 levels with the previous crops is the reason for 12 to 14 oz plants. This crop used vented outdoor air.
Past crops used a dehumidifier and the high Co2 ppm house air

Remember chase your dreams its the only way to reach them and a good challenge !
