Are my Plants Sterile?

Hi Folks!

So I got seeds from a friend of a friend of a friend who took them from some buds they had.

I planted them and they germinated beautifully. But I planted them at the wrong time (autumn) 5 months ago.

So 2 of the plants are really doing well. Tons of leaves and standing at about 25 cm.

But I see no indication of them revealing whether they are male or female. And I am checking with a magnifying glass.

Is it possible that they are sterile and will grow but not yield any crop?

Or are they slow to show their sex because I planted them at the wrong time?

Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Could be heavy Sativa... if that makes a difference. I know it does when it comes down to the time they flower.

How many hrs of total darkness do they receive?

And no. They're not "sterile". That's not how it works. Eventually they'll show sex but they need to "build" those hormones up and that comes from 12 or more hrs of total, complete, no light leak darkness.

Pollen can be "sterile" but cannabis is a dioecious plant.

That might be what I'm doing wrong. They're in my kitchen at night which has light coming in from outside lights. So if I put them in a totally dark room it'll be better?

What about a dark cupboard? Since we have lights on all around our house at night it's difficult to stop light from leaking.

Yeah, I would think a cupboard or closet could work

Do they have very skinny leaves and large gaps up the branches between each set of leaves? If so. You're likely looking at a long flowering time too.

But if they're 5mo old and are a decent size. You might be getting a good amount of smoke from them too.

I just checked and it's the total opposite. Fat leaves with small spaces between each set. Over the past 2 months they have literally exploded with leaves.

I got some universal plant food and feed them every second week. Ratio is 2.5 ml to 1 liter of water. Since I started using that they have really grown a lot.

Righto. Sounds like an Indica. You can still get heaps from those. And no. They won't suffocate in a wardrobe. They don't breathe like we do.

They do breathe. Just not the same as us.

This might be also adding to your problem. Usually universal feed means for vegetative growth and very high in Nitrogen. You might want to transition to blooming fert.
