First grow..vipaspectra 450w led

a question for all...would there be any benefit in lifting the scrog above the plant now and try spreading it or zip tie it all down???

I normally harvest when all trichs are cloudy, and you are seeing amber. However, I always make sure there are no clear trichs. A lot of the time it means staged harvests. But it also depends on the strain. And my biggest advice, make sure you are not seeing damaged trichs and confusing them for good amber trichs. Chocolope, which is a sativa, I pull that as soon as I start seeing amber. Original Sour Diesel, which I believe is a 50/50, I pull at all cloudy, and seeing good amber trichs on each bud. Something like AKS, which is indica, all cloudy, no clear, and decent amount of amber.

As Sub said, the more amber, the more couch lock. And yes, it is trial and error :) Every strain is different :)
 
Please don't harvest your plants based on trichs. That's not an accurate way to do it as new trichs form throughout the growth of the buds up into full maturity.
There's actually a very simple tried and true method to make sure your buds are fully mature, just by looking at them.
The hairs will have receeded back into the calyxes and they will have become swollen in appearance. This is when your buds have reach full potential and density.
Here's 2 pictures to show what I mean, one is almost ready but not quite. Notice how the hairs are still visible and calyxes have not quite become enlarged. Now notice how the opposite is true for the second pic which shows a mature, now ready to harvest flower.

I just look at the plant, but looking at trichs works too. I think you are right that there will be new trichs at the end, but there should be many others that have matured.

Anybody know if trichs and pistils continue to mature after cut? For how long? If my plant looks like the second picture above, is it probable that I can cut and expect it will fully finish after the cut?

I've had to cut plants early and it sucked, the smell and flavor and high all decreased. One plant had all white pistils, but through the drying process they all turned orange. Typical?
 
I use the same light, I'm a new grower also. I have 2 plants in a 3 gallon pot about 3 feet high. I would say the Vipar 450 is a decent light, but does not have the penetration.
With my limitations in height, mine hovers over the plants about 6-8 inches and I do get light burn and foxtail.
I can't help it because I am at max height in my grow tent.
About the penetration, it seems the lower part of the plant doesn't get much, but the top parts are healthy for the most part.
With that being 6-8 inches above my 2 plants taking 4 feet wideness, I do have badly shaded areas on the left and right side which I supplemented with 2700k CFLS 10,000 lumens each side. It helped the slow growth on the sides.
Good light for its price, but maybe not the best for tall plants looking for high yield.

I am about 9 weeks into flowering. Fat f***ing buds, no joke. About 2 bic lighters wide
 
Hey all..decided to remove the scrog..reason being the footprint of my plant is big enough for the light..spreading it any further would take the plant outside of the light. Its my first grow so ill keep it manageable for my first.
Very happy though as plenty of bud sites...just a matter of patience now:)

I should like to know what are the signs of light burn, I suspect I may have this going on. Its my first try with an LED ( Viparspectra 450)leafs seem a bit pale and jaded ?brown tips to the serated edges of leaves ?-some leaves kind of half way to brown--no signs of foxtailing as aIloverice states above-is the solution to just movethem further away from the light ? MY NL are around 8 inches from the light just now.

Buds look great..im only just 10 days into flower was thinking of buying a hps bulb for the flower stage, but, your buds look like there doing well under the vipar??
Is it worth £50 to change lights you think??

Bilbo, sorry, been busy so haven't been on here much. So much to do, so little time!
Anyhow, the staged harvest...keep in mind I'm not a professional, just grow for personal medical use. What I have found is that the bud sites that get the most light (top of plant, sometimes sides, depending on how your light is distributed), tend to be ready to harvest earlier than other sites that may get a little shadow. So when I see those buds are ready (calyxes swollen (as mentioned above), hairs "browning", and how the trichs look), I will harvest the ones that are ready...that's always been the ones at the top of the plant (keep in mind if you scrog or LST, it could be different...I'm talking about just straight growing plants) and maybe a couple on the sides if they are hanging outward and catching a bunch of light. All I do is just harvest those buds, and the rest of the plant stays in on it's normal cycle. I do check the buds daily, and I continue to harvest those that are ready. Usually, the lower buds are ready at the same time and you can complete that harvest then. The first time I did this, I kept all the buds harvested at the same time together, then once cured, I compared the smoke quality. I guess I did something right because they were all awesome! Prior to doing this, I had one plant where I harvested everything all together, but I kept the buds from the top separate from the lower buds, and compared them after curing. I didn't like the difference between them, so I "stage" harvest all the time now.

Trichs aren't the only thing I look at, but I do base a lot off of them. Just personal experience. :)
 
Thanks man--nice to know you can do that, there are certain grows as you know where phenos mean you maybe have a tall plant--and another from the same seed pack where the plant turns out short and bushy--I have got round this by raising the smaller plant up to the height of the taller plant by sitting it on a pile of books or whatever else I got that's handy. Now I know there is an alternative method if the circumstances fir---much obliged
 
decided to stick with the vipa 450w for this flowering stage..im 19 days since the flip and all looks well..
