Too much light for seedlings (uncapped LED bulbs)

I like the bottom feeding technique .. make the roots search for the water.. but dont let them sit in the still water let them drink then drain the tray 15 or 20 mins later

Hi All,

After a little DIYing we were about to create a new set-up that is somewhere around 25" in height. It is open at the moment, but we are going to create some kind of walls for it. Perhaps just sheets of tin foil running down to the ground from the top. The light radius of those LEDs may be a lot wider than we had originally researched. Or it could just be the strength of the uncapped bulbs. They definitely create a wider light radius and aren't just straight down as we had originally researched.

Anyways thanks for the help. Tomorrow and going forward we will be paying more attention to the amount of water going in / out.

pics of new setup / status coming tonight.

Should we be introducing nutrients to these seedlings? Could that help these ladies get back on track?

Medium is coco.

If yes, please let us know what's good for young plants or veg phase.

Thanks!

You can now just keep the light up high. I keep mine at 24" from seedlings watering every other day seem a bit excessive that's a lot of space that to hold extra water. The roots soil your using isn't bad I generally mix that with green fields and pro mix when I I'm not using supersoil. Just watch the amount of water your giving them and you should be good for a week or two. Just watch them and water them when they ask you trust me you'll learn to read your plants just be patient.
Woah. We missed that comment. Are you saying give the solo cups of coco a week between watering?

a week seems a little long but every other day seems to much i think find the happy medium.. set a cup of your soil medium in the same cups and leave it with the plants . water it like you would the plants. then when you think the plants will need water check the blank cups soil, take it out and squeeze and inspect for any moister. the amount a seedling drinks is very little most the water lost will be thru drying out more then drinking. so if the blank cup needs water then water the plants if there is any moister wait another day. once you get the hang of it you will know what to look for and wont need the extra cup.

Brilliant suggestion!!! We are going to do this tonight.

Thoughts on nutrients at this stage of the grow?

Also the Thermo meter arrived.
Temp ~79°F / Humid ~49%

Once your plant grows out the container and starts drinking this will not help at all because the container will dry out quite significantly faster. Personally i always feel an inch down in small solo cups to see if i feel moisture before watering. Maybe a little deeper. Some would recommend a moisture meter but you can certainly do without one.

Some feel the heaviness of the pot at water and wait till it feels light to them

My seedling get water every three days maybe four and they're in tiny starter trays. they start in coco before getting transplanted to bigger pots. Most time I simply look at them to figure out if they need watering.

Day 25 - Of the fight for survival...And still many questions

Should we start introducing nutrients?
**edit**
We have the following nutrients on hand and will start feeding at tomorrow's watering
organic 4-4-4
miracle grow 24-8-16

We aren't feeling all that confident about the weight, so we have a food scale to help. When the solo cups reach a weight around 170 grams we water till there is run-off.
The other plants in the photos are pepper plants, figured we would try to make use of the extra light until these are big enough to go in a tent. We also are testing the coco mix on a couple pepper plants to see if we are clearly clueless or if it was just a bad start for this round of seedlings.

Here are the latest photos (day 25)

Sorry i havent been commenting on feeding because i dont do coco but im pretty certain coco is purely a medium, it can take in and hold nutrients but pure coco wouldnt have much for the plants. You need to add very light feed. Maybe 1/4 strength or if theres a recomendation for seedlings then id start with half of that

You should seriously invest in some nutes. That miracle grow is a bad idea. Ive used the foxfarm trio and earth juice, grow bloom and micro. I just started using floranova bloom in my first dwc (deep water culture)setup the other day so i cant comment on it personally but floranova grow and floranova bloom are one part nutrients, as in you only use one bottle at a time generally speaking, that have some very good reviews. Also i know of a guy who uses just the floranova bloom in veg and flower in coco dtw(drain-to-waste). Im using it for veg in my first dwc and if you're interested ill report back on how that goes.

Hi All,

Our seedlings are growing very slowly. Could we have too much Cree LED light on them?

the lights are about 12 inches above the tops of the seedlings. Twelve 60w (9w equivalent) uncapped bulbs in a 3x4 grid pointing straight down on the seedlings.

There is a 6 inch fan blowing air when the lights are on.

Best guess the air temp is probably high 70's. No idea about humidity at the moment (meter is still backlogged from Amazon)...
U can never have to much light I smash my baby's with 2 600w HP's in 2 weeks they have 3-4,main leaves with right temps plenty of air they do fine I can tell u now u have done 3 things wrong u have over watered under watered or fed them how often do u water ?

We are now watering when the cups get down to a weight of 170 grams. This happens about every 3-4 days.

Plants are 25 days old.

Starting this morning, we introduced 1/4 strength 5-5-5 organic fertilizer. That will now be consistent.

That fertilizer will work for now but your gonna see issues if you continue to use it. Also does it contain the other essential nutrients? Calcium, sulfer, magnesium, boron, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and molybdenum? If your using tap you can forget calcium and magnesium cause youll probably get it there. Softening will exchange the calcium and magnesium for sodium though so if its softened then it wont work for that and ime will cause issues with rising ph
