The military is actually a pretty good macrocosm regarding social dynamics. In many cases the first time that two young people of different backgrounds will be in a situation where they must set aside differences and work together, lest they fucking die. Also consider that the military is the only option for social mobility for inner city and rural poor alike. Most people don't realize that it is often the poor, the troubled and those with few other options who end up wearing boots and carrying rifles. It's hard to be a teenage peckerwood when one's survival correlates directly to how well his black drill sergeant trains him. The uniform can't be racist or bigoted against itself.

I'm sure there are a lot of things the average person doesn't know about the military.

I served with men and women of all colors, religion and beliefs. All I'm concerned with is the person next to me doing their job.
