New light or not?

I currently have a 2x4x6 tent running 4 vero 18's on HLG120-1050b and a Mars 300 with 2-3 plants. I am getting roughly 1-1.5oz off each. I have only done 4 grows with 2 in soil and 2 in coco, so I am still very new.

Would I benefit in getting either 4x qb120, qb260 kit or a 400 watt HPS? I plan on using the vero 18 to veg if I get a new light.

a qb120 would be more efficient than what your currently using. if you considering HID than a CMH may be a better choice. commercial growers claim they are getting the same yield from a 630 cmh that they previously got from 1000 watt HPS and higher quality as well and 315 watt CMH are becoming more affordable https://www.ebay.com/itm/VIVOSUN-315w-Watt-Ceramic-Metal-Halide-CMH-CDM-Grow-Light-Fixture-Ballast-Kit/172745313101?epid=16003913997&hash=item28386c4b4d:m:mCMiwsOwt9c25LUzz1AJlCw 3-4.5 oz from a 2 by 4 tent is low. many people are getting 8 ounces from a tent that size using a 8 bulb T5 and some are reporting 10 ounces with a 315 cmh.good luck

dont worry 1.5zips per plant isnt bad for your fourth grow, 2zips per plant is about average for a new grower.

Once the "want a new light bug" hits you it's only a matter of time til you do it.

I'll throw Tasty brand lamps in the ring along with some info on light intensity for photosynthesis.

300w output of 50% efficiency LED will provide 900-1000 PPFD depending on Kelvin temp and CRI. That's a bar above what it takes to get good results but not pushing it too hard. (T4-V725)

250w of same can produce really good results, 750-830 PPFD

400w at 50% getting closer to limits at 1230-1330 PPFD (2x T22s would accomplish this)

Assuming your vero's are running around 40w each, those alone should be perfectly adequate to effectively cover a 3 x 3 space with around 2 x 2 of actual canopy and should return between 2 and 4 oz per cycle. It sounds to me like you could be harvesting too soon, have too small pots, or are simply not adept at plant husbandry after 4 runs. None of that being a criticism, we are all noobs when we start out and I grew some damn shabby shit first few years and I'm known as being naturally 'green fingered' and can grow just about anything in a garden. The conditions of indoor growing stress the plants and trying to replicate moma nature in a 4 x 4 tent is always gonna fall flat on its face. Best we can hope for is to do the best we can with what we are given. This means being attentive to our plants but not hurrying them. Check for moisture content every day but ONLY water as they need it, pot on in good time, don't let the girls get root bound, give them plenty of root space and lastly, learn to have the patience of a saint. Some strains just need that extra week and if you harvest too early the colas will be big but empty, all the weight is in the resins and often they are the very last thing the plant produces just as its about to keel over dead! Its not a science, its an art form and artistic shit needs practice, there are no natural virtuoso's just players who have put in the 10,000 hrs of practice! :bigjoint:

My last 2 grows have had airy buds. This grow has had fungus gnats so I have been very conservative on water but I believe the pests are gone now. Honestly, I just want to get or build a new light so I do not have to mess with 2 anymore. I would love to try the 315W CMH but I am worried about heat. I will probably end up going with a qb260 kit or 4 vero 29 at higher watts but I need to see what driver and vero 29's to get.

I feel ya, I'd personally keep the vero 18's and either add more of the same or mix 29's and 18's, I have a mix of single 29's here and luxeon 1211's which more or less match your 18's for general character. I see better results from the girls under the multiple 40w cobs than the single 29's and suspect the more even light distribution allows me to press the lights down hard on the canopy without bleaching.

QB260 kit alone is good for about 10zips in a 2 x4‘.
If you still want to use your V18, I recommend to put them to each of the corners and you'll get a very even coverage.
Mid power/COB LED combi's are probably the best you can do currently.

Tipp:
You can place diatomaceous earth on the substrate surface or mix it directly into the substrate, this will eradicate fungus gnats and soil living thrips. If you do not have gnats, cover the surface with a layer of sand, clay pebbles or similar, which prevents infestation from the outside. Positiv side effect, the plant can use the whole substrate because the surface do not dry out as much as without such a layer.
