Hey fellow RIU peoples, I hope you've been well these past 6 months.
I've had a lot going on, so I just haven't had a lot of time to do anything on the internet. I had a terrible, life-changing head injury in December, with significant bleeding in the left side of my head. I walked into a dark house, went the wrong direction, and fell down the stairs into the basement. I don't actually remember this at all, but someone found me in the morning on the floor in the basement, I was probably laying down there unconscious for several hours. The really bad part is that I'm supposed to be a scientist, so something like this was especially devastating to me on several levels besides just being in a lot of pain in pretty much my whole body. However, after having my ears ring for about a month, and a 5 month long headache, and some crazy issues with my wrist, I'm happy to report that I feel a lot better now. Headaches are mostly gone and I've been exercising my hand and I can use it pretty normally now, and without much pain, and I feel pretty much like my old self. Thank god for that.
For a second blow, my boss didn't give a shit about all the time I lost due to the injury and she decided not to renew my contract in the lab. Strange thing is that I've asked her for feedback on my performance and she never said anything negative, so this was really a shock. But fuck her, I have made a huge discovery and so I'm going to be able to shit out a quality research paper before I leave, and hopefully I can find a faculty position this fall. I have so much work to do, including finishing up this research project, write a research statement and a teaching statement, and make a presentation for the interview dog and pony show...I lost so much time due to getting hurt, but I think I will be alright, and I like a good challenge. I have to say, that I don't really like this lab very much anyway, so this is probably the best for all of us.
But enough about that. I also had some time to dick around with the mini fridge, and I stole a liquid-cooled CPU cooler from work since she wasn't keeping me around, so I got it working a few days ago. Here's a quick pic. Keep in mind that this is still sort of the testing stage ( I don't want anything to catch on fire or who knows what could happen) so there's wires hanging and things look rough. I had to buy a couple relays, and a driver, but I had the LED, a 4000K CXB3590, and the fans just laying around, so I didn't have to spend much money.
It keeps the temp from 77-81 degrees F. The air comes in through the bottom (the tray is removable) and exhaust exits on the left there toward the top. The fan is actually near the floor, but there is a tube, the top has those wires on it. Also, the plants look like shit, I will freely admit this. I think they were too hot upstairs. This thing runs really cool...having the heat removed with the pump really makes a noticeable difference over having a warm piece of metal in that small volume. Plus, it's nice and low profile.
