Having Issues Getting Seedlings Started...

I grow mainly plants starting from seed.

Lately however, I have started the seeds, they germinate but then they seem to be getting yellow tips like they are being burned with nutrients but I am just giving them plain PH'd water.

I do not understand...

I start seeing the yellowing, then stunted growth and there are ZERO nutes involved.

This has happened on 8 seeds, then trashed them. Now I planted 4 more, they germinated and same issue once again...

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

what medium are they in?

When I germ seeds, I put the seeds in water for 24 hours, then in a wet paper towel, and when they have a short tap root, they go into a mix of potting soil and perlite. The potting soil is really just a soil-less blend and has no nutrients in it.

If you are using a soil that is rich, like ff ocean forest, you can burn your seedlings. Also, try to keep them warm and keep the humidity up. Not humidity dome wet, but 50-60%.

Hey Greg! My seedlings are in a soiless mix of coco coir and perlite mix with ZERO nutes.

The only other thing I can think of is the humidity is pretty low right now ( in the 30's) Temps range from 60-75 in day and night times.

Any other thoughts why these seedlings seem to bee getting nute burned with no nutes in them?

Only other thing is to be sure to not over water them and don't put them under too much light.. Seedlings don't really need more than 50-100 watts of t5 light. If you have then under a 400+ light, you are probably light burning them.

As for the water, too moist for too long and you will get stem rot (I forget the term, but basically the stem rots at the base of the soil and the tiny plant will eventually fall over and die).

How exactly are you germinating them?

I've gone right to starting my seeds in promix I've screened through a 1mm mesh. Same mesh as window screen. Before planting I shake them around for a couple minutes, by the clock, in a pill jar lined with 150grit sandpaper.

I use those 9-hole seed starter pots and cover them loosely with a baggie or something to keep the top moist until they emerge. Getting better germ rates than I was soaking them in water first. Was having the same problem as you with the tips of the taproot turning brown and dying as it emerged from the seed. I've never used the paper towel method and planted once they had a 1/4" tail on them.

Once they are up I give them a little dilute nutrients right away as there is no nutes in the promix.

Good Luck!

Damping off is the term you seek. :)

Put the seed in the center of the pot, hang 23W spiral or 1000 lumen equivalent LED bulb 1.5 inches above the pot. Put tiny desk fan on, blowing next to pot so air gently moves by. Add one tablespoon of water in the morning and one in the evening over the spot the seed is in (less if it is cold). Sometimes they will come out a bit yellow if they don't have enough light, just keep on adjusting the light to the same distance above the seedling as it grows. I like giving a very dilute feeding of MKP, or kelp or a water with a squeezed out aquarium filter's mess in. It is very mild and full of nitrifying bacteria (good guys), after a week or so.

Sorry If I wasn’t clear fellas..

Germinating is not the problem.

Is the first two weeks of life that is crippling my seedlings.

They start turning yellow and tips get burned , but I am not administering any nutrients whatsoever.... just plain PH’d water.

See pics attached.

Any thoughts on the issue? Judging by the drip trays you are adding too much water when you water or prepare the cups (I hate planting in cups with a passion).
THings just need to be moist. not wet. That seedling will live for about 2 weeks before dying if not watered. You want to force it to make roots, you gotta let it look for water.

Also, there should not be that many salts in the dried up water. Did you rinse and buffer the coco before using it?

Your seedlings are being sucked of calcium by the cation exchange capacity (CAC) of coco. You need to "charge" your coco with a mild nutrient mix that includes extra calcium.
Best of luck.

My thoughts exactly. Coco needs some CalMag and seedlings need to eat something. They're not burning, they're starving.

Like ProMix HP there's no nutes in his medium. 1/4 strength of both balanced nutes and CalMag will perk them up and get them going.

THAT'S IT!!!!! Darn my feeble mind!!!

You wouldn't believe all the times I'm talking to someone and suddenly I stall on a word that I can SEE in my head but it won't come out. Minor stroke a few years back and it's a lot better than it was but still have a lot of old fart moments. Goes with the territory! :D

The beauty of posting is when that happens I can sit here until it comes to me and type it with no one being the wiser. :D

I'm getting dyslexic with my typing tho. Words like The, Them, That, There and many other come out Teh, Tehm, Taht and Teher. Even when I make a conscious effort to not do that. Again I get away with it thanks to spell check and and a good look over before hitting that post button. :)

I wish all aspects of my life had built-in do-overs. lol

Two compliments in one day. I'm on a roll! Not going to be able to wear my hat tomorrow as it will be too big for my swelled head. rotflmao.gif

Knowledge learned and not shared is wasted. Helping others makes me a better grower too. If I don't know the exact answer I go looking for it and learn something new as well. I've learned from the greats that went before me and I aspire to be. I've learned plenty from a lot of the growers here who do the same as me to.

It's a win-win!

I was holding off from saying this yesterday but since your head is already swollen I'll pile on.
I feel like your postings are showing how much better you are feeling since your appendix problem was resolved.
Great info too!

That happens to me more and more, and I don't even have a stroke to blame it on. ;)

It almost feels like my memory lives in a bubble and anything just outside of that bubble becomes fuzzy. I forget people's names that I work with, or places I've been, or projects I've worked on. The bubble seems to be shrinking unfortunately. Oh, and I'm losing my sense of smell. Weird how life can sneak up on you. Good thing my phone has a gps to get me home, if I can remember its password that is.

Anyway, what was I saying? ;)

That is certainly true. My energy levels are slowly increasing. I'm getting more stuff done that I have been putting off for far too long. I'm way more positive at the time of year when my depression is always at it's worst. If this keeps up I'll have to hand my med card back and give up using pot as meds. Fat chance of that happening! :D

My last crop was back in June and I should have had two more by now but just couldn't get past the fatigue and depression to do what needed doing. Been like that the last 5 years. Now I finally have the CBD girls flowering, got 6 cuts each off the 3 of them and a total of 9 cuts off the sativa and my OG#18 and 8 nice new plants in their 7th week of growth. Seeds coming in from a buddy back east and I'll be sprouting at least 10 of those right away as soon as I have them in my hot little hands. Not Trump little but appropriately sized for my frame. ;)

Lots of irons in the fire and I'm not even apprehensive about dropping the ball like I usually have been. happydance.gif

I think this new year is going to be the best in a very long time. Hope it is for all of you guys and gals too!

A little disappointed after seeing the nurse practitioner yesterday. Not able to sign a renewal and can only refer me to a clinic two hours away that seems to only send your recommendation to an LP so you can buy their schwag with no mention of giving you the original so you can apply to grow your own. No charge for their service indicates to me that they get a kick-back from from the LP and likely they only have one or two that they will refer you to and those are likely owned by the same people but with different names. I'm going to contact them pretending to be interested in their services and find out more but everything on their website says LP shill to me. LeafWise.ca

Picked up a jar of L-arginine at the health food store yesterday and gave the owner an eighth of my OG#18 for her son that was there at the time. Downs syndrome adult. He showed me some street pot he had and gave me a little nug for a tester. Toxic waste would be a polite way to describe it. Took one tiny hit in my pipe and could taste the sprays that had been used on it and a couple min later my mouth tasted like burned plastics. Calling her to let her know and offer to beat any deal he gets by half to make sure he's not smoking more of that crap. She already wants some of my pure CBD plant when it's ready. I've known her for 15 years and she's gone thru shit the last 5.

I found out just a couple years ago that my birth mother died after 10 years of dementia at age 75. Means she started the dementia at age 65. Less than 2 years and I'm 65. Am I walking around with a time bomb in my head I wonder. If learning new stuff is supposed to help prevent that I should be OK.

I've never been good with names and it caused me a lot of grief in organic chem classes and I was only in my 30s then. I find my fuse is getting shorter all the time but I take it out on inanimate objects and not the wife or dog. :)

Low zinc levels are often a cause of poor taste and smell. I take it to stop the thrice nightly trips to the toilet to pee a few drops. 50mg tabs from the drug store work fine and don't cost much. Take two a day for the first week then one a day after. Sleep all night fine.

Hadn't heard of zinc, I'll look into it. I hear cannabis is a good treatment. I wonder where I can get some. ;)

Other than the hear,t the prostate has the most need of Zn than any other organ in the body. My heart tests strong and at 63 I still wake up with a rock hard dick every morning. Sure wish the wife was as happy about that as I am. ;)

Full head of long hair too but that's more likely a genetic thing. No pharma meds either and that helps everything.
