First time growing, need help designing my setup.

I was planning on growing 3 plants indoors. I'm having trouble figuring out whats the best lighting would be without spending a ton of money. From what i researched the galaxyhydro 600w LED (possibly supplemented with clf's?) looked like a good choice. But apparently a lot of these cheaper LEDs aren't what they're advertised to be. Would I be better off with HID lights? I also live in a colder area and was wondering how necessary a tent would be. I plan on improving the setup as I gain experience but I want to make sure I meet the minimum requirements.

found a Horticulture 400 Watt MH HPS Grow Light System Set Kit $90 on ebay that Id use along with CFLs I already have lying around the house, thanks for the replies. Can anyone fill me in on a tent, or maybe a DIY kinda thing?

Those CFLs laying around can be utilized for seed sprouting/seedling stages.
Nothing wrong with a good ol 400 MH/HPS combo ballast. That's gonna get ya into a 3x3(ish) area, for 3 plants, plenty of space IMO.

Premade tents, even the cheaper ones will get the job done. The DIY box route can add up to the same cost in a hurry. Also with tents, the reflective surface is already taken care of, ventilation ports are there, and they're generally pretty light tight. Some have pinhole leaks, and zipper issues, all easy fixes for little or no cost.

I like 2 or 3 gallon cloth pots/felt pots/ whatever brand I can get for the cheapest. I like the way they drain evenly, and air prune the roots. Look up air pruning if you don't know what that is.

Research the ventilation issue, search the forums for direction on odor control, and air movement. Small tent= small fans/filters= cheap enough.

You'll definitely want (need) a PH meter, and a TDS meter. They don't have to be expensive either. The cheap ones work enough, they may not last forever, and need regular calibration, but you gotta have something. Get a bottle of calibration solution for the ph meter as well.

These forums will be a great resource for information about grow mediums and nutrients. Convince yourself, and accept the fact that less is more, because it is, certainly in the beginning days.

Growing can be super simple, or super complicated, and there are loads of conflicting opinions on every subject involved.

Meet the basic needs of the plants, and you will be rewarded.

before you chose your lighting, you need to have a goal on how much weight you want to grow. if half pound is your goal that's a 400w hid a 320w led (actual draw) or a 200w cob ., if your only looking to produce a few oz weaker leds cfs or t5s will do the trick, want a lb your gonna need a 315 cmh, 500w led 300w cob, or a 600w hid. if you want to produce on a commercial level that's 1.5 to 3 lbs per light you gona need 1k hid, 630 cmh, 800w led or 550w cob

Thanks Chip! I second his suggest of the 400 MH/HPS combo ballast. Would be great to be able to switch to HPS for flower without switching entire system. I was going to add if you are going to be cheap and you could only choose one, choose HPS because it's good enough in veg and better in flower. Seems harder to find used HPS though. And if you know a little electronics it helps because you have to change the voltage from 220 to 110, but that is an easy youtube. Biggest disadvantage of being this cheap for a small tent would be suboptimal for cooling, space usage, and super heavy to hang since the ballast is connected. But I have no tent and that causes other problems, like smell, light leaks and humidity control, to name a few. Suggest also you try the tent and 400W and learn from there. I can't comment on LEDs. It obviously can work, but too many choices there for me. HID works and used is cheep. Biggest issues with repurposed HID are heat control and space.

I'd buy new! Can't afford it, wait. If you know what you're doing, then cheap on! I've wasted a lot on trying crap & learning to grow, a princess, ain't cheap!
Yes a 400w mh/hps is all you need! Almost everything these today's will run both. If you can afford a 600-1000w, & think you may expand in the future, buying once is cheaper! Solid state ballast, like my Gavita 600e, is silent. Others will have fans that make noise - if you're interested in that.
Now a reflector is something I'll listen for some advice on. A cooltube will go so far but a hood has to be better, if you enclose the bulb. You can always do the bare bulb thing, too.

Lol! I thought I could break this thing down, in a couple seconds, grabbed up the pipe & got to typing. I've ended up sitting on my bed, staring at the TV with security on, trying to figure out how a plant lives! Lol! These plants are awesome. I hope everyone had a great holiday!

Didn't mean to be a Gavita snob! I've been pumping water, that's come with the rain, out from the basement! Came up for a break and started typing too soon, my bad!
I think hids have a lot broader use than leds. A 4 or 600 hid with a cooltube & fan is definitely cheaper than a led setup, for 3 three to four foot, hopefully, plants.
How stealth do you need things?

Someone on these forums recommended high tech garden supply and I found a 600w set on clearance for 130ish but honestly that seemed almost too cheap to be true. I can’t post a link since I’m too new but if anyone can confirm they’re decent that’s prob what I’m going with. I’m not worried about being stealthy but the best space I have is a poorly insulated attic. It’s maybe 50-55 degrees, I’ll have to check next week. I’m worried it’s going to be too cold, especially since winters by me are next level cold. Will the lamp creat enough heat ?

Probably not enough heat. Definitely not at lights out. And if in summer your attic is too hot as in > 80F it's an even more difficult problem to deal with.

Enough heat in a tent though, Or is lights out still a problem? I have somewhere else to put them but there’s not much room to expand. I’m moving in a year anyways so maybe with the 600w I can just veg fewer plants for longer ?

A tent could help but at lights out will still get cold. You will probably need a heater. Be safe with that though. Maybe the tent sellers sell duct fans with heaters that you can arrange safely outside the tent and duct it in via duct tubes.
