ir-block

Buying rates are 30 cents per pound around here, no info on selling though, mostly sold in bulk to factories.

You'd probably not want to put that much effort into making sheets.

Ir blocker isn't that expensive, compared to the amount of labor you're talking about.
True, but it's always good to know there's another option open to people.

Basements seem like a logical place to grow anyway, no ones gonna notice it to be honest. :D

Don't listen to that dumbass about the lead! He is pulling your chain. Like the others said; If its a small grow - don't wooorrryy! Everthing gonna be all right man!!

Hello I've been researching different types of IR blocking films and don't have a clue on witch one works, it sounds like you have some firsthand experience with this stuff and I'm new to it all and have u.s. core of engineers helicopter going over my place every day sketching me out . When I first moved here I was using a measuring wheel see how much rock I was going to have put down and this guy came and hovered over me for about thirty minutes or so I waved at the guy but he stayed in one place and hovered over me and I was not feeling to cool about it . Need to schooled on this stuff what works and what does not .

I have covered the outside of my cab in the Black/Silver IR/shield stuff (Chopper Stopper) I have used it just as an extra to make me more settled that I have protected myself & my grow as best as possible.. It does work well, the guy in my local shop had a FLIR gun and hid a tent with a 600 on in it, and showed me the heat sig.. it was just bluey purple.. then he aimed the gun across the room at a tent with 2 600's in it with no IR shield and it showed up as mental yellow and red... so it does work but obviously its down to the grower to apply it correctly and deal with any other heat issues etc 1st.. I reccomend using it as an extra...but by no means skimp on more important aspects of keeping your grow cool, and quiet..

The Choppers are now picking up on in-line fans too.. so silencers and box fans maybe the way to go with larger grows etc.. - STELTHY :leaf:

As the other guy just said the Lead thing is absolute bollocks, Lead has nothing to do with IR detection, thats x-rays.

IR-block basicly does work in certain circumstances and does help growers to a degree. There is a video of a guy standing outside with an IR camera rolling and when he covers himself in the film he becomes invisible to the IR camera.
Now for example in a loft grow environment this does little to help because once the film has let heat through via conduction the protection against heat via radiation becomes obsolete (basicly the heat transfers and your roof becomes visible on IR camera again). The biggest insulating factor with using IR-block films is actually the sealed airgap created by sealing up any gaps and taping up all the joins with the foil tape. One of the biggest advantages is keeping the heat out during summer and keeping warm in winter.

By far the better suited product to use would be the double foil bubble insulation like Thermowrap because it has a better thermal insulation value, is much much easier to work with and does not take up your precious loft space for eg. Also the bubble foil insulation is ideal for creating tents within the loft space very cheaply that maximise space for your grow tent within an awkward size loft area (all you need is a staple gun, scissors and some tape etc). It's all over ebay and it's cheap enough. You can go really fancy and have ducting running from tent to tent before venting outside through a sytem of fans with carbon filter etc.

Nope.
Most people recommend lining your room with lead.
i could be wrong about the thickness but it's something like half an inch thick.

Go to your local scrapyard and see if they have sheets of it.

But apart from that, most police won't bother with a small grow. :-P

Um..I dont know what planet you're on, but a piece of Lead, the size of a golf ball weighs in at about 4 pounds (2KG).
a half inch thick piece of lead, the size of a 2' x 2' "wall" would probably weigh about a thousand pounds.
Lead is an EXCELLENT conductor of heat so it wont block IR.
But if superman is flying over your house, his x-ray vision cant penetrate it, so I guess it depends on what
planet you're on.
