I appreciate the response and I like your answer however doing that 24 times a day with 5 gallon pots tends to get stressful on the back for someone with the back problems I have. I have been trying just by checking the top 2 to 3 inches with my finger but the problem there is sometimes it's dry on the top but the bottom is still too wet and I'm starting to end up with signs of overwatering even though it doesn't seem like I'm over watering to meMoister tutorial..
.. When you mix up your soil or when your doing transplants... Whatever...
Make a dry pot of soil..
Lift it up. As many times as you have to to mentally know what that feels like.. If you want you can put this dry pot aside for a point of reference.
Make your soil, put your plant in the same size pot, and water your plant and pickup this pot.. And remember it.
Or even weigh it if you want to get technical.
Then when you go to water next time you'll know if they need to be watered or not... They'll feel pretty light but not dry ya know.
Fuck the meter.
That's exactly why I'm looking into it it's just hard on my back to lift each pot. The pH meter isn't as big of a concern to me but I figured you can buy just a pH meter or moisture meter for $10 mind as well get a three and one for the same priceeven if I decide I don't like the results of the pH meterpersonally i like the meter lol. lifting or weighing a couple pots isnt a huge deal but more than a handful the meter makes it really easy as you just stick it in and see the moitsure content. its accurate too.
the ph meter doesnt work, at least ive never gotten it to read anything lower than around 7.8, even sticking it in a cup of vinegar doesnt do anything lol.
its really useless but the moisture reader comes in handy every once in a while. id say buy it if it makes you feel better. its only 10 bucks.
What is the typical holding capacity for a four and a 5 gallon pot. I tend to use about a gallon and a quarter per 5 gallon at the momentif you use a 4 gallon pot add one gallon of water to your container each time its light and dry again.
If you water them all the same you only have to lift one. And if you have a bad back this is a poor hobby to get into pal lol
Once you do it once you'll just know.. You won't have to lift or even tilt the bucket for a few days at the beginning.
Towards the end of flower you'll be watering every day or two. You won't even have to check. You get into a schedule.
that im not sure about, i only use that when im repositioning pots to make sure they are getting SOME light penetration (i use blurple led) and to make sure my seedlings arent TOO close to the light (i keep my seedlings 50/50 on the light scale and the tops obviously get 100%, im not sure about lumen vs lux though, it has to do with the area involved)Would the light meter really make any difference considering it's measured In lux not lumens?
i wipe it down with a wet paper towel but i dont clean it with alcohol or anything like that. i havent found the need to as i havent ran into any contaminations or infestations or anything. ive been using it for the last 4 grows over the past several months but i dont have huge grows, they are actually really small just personal use, 2-3 at a time and 12 12 from seed so yeah lol.Do you clean your meter every time befor you deep inject it into your plants roots?
Seems like a mode of infection especially for noobs. After a grow you'll just know.
Moisture is easy to tell

plants will demand different watering schedules, but that does not change the fact that that each (like) container requires roughly the same amount of water to wet the contents completely when the container is dry and light.ive noticed running different strains can result in different feeding and watering schedules. i had a white 99 plant drinking nearly twice as much as my blue dream started at the same time but the white 99 was far more sensitive to overfeeding.

1/4 of total pot size?1/4th
1/4 of soil volume is close. Water dry medium this way and watch for a little run off, not even enough to mop up.1/4 of total pot size?
