Great Smell Good High - No Taste ??

Harvested my Chocolate Kush plants after 9 weeks of Flowering. About 3-4 days into cure, my son came by and picked up a Mason Jar so he could share with other patients. He has smoked some and complains the bud has no distinct taste. The bud smells really good, has a good high, but lacks a good taste. Will the taste improve once it has been properly cured?

1. Harvested and trimmed the buds - hung in dry room for 4 days until outside of the bud started to feel dry. Stems bend but did not break.
2. Cut and stored buds in Mason Jars with Hygrometers. Starting Humidity 70% - Burping every day.
3. Cure Day 12 - Humidity at 65%.
4. Will continue to burp until Humidity reaches 55% -

Hopefully in 3 weeks a good taste will develop along with the great high / pain relief.

Some plants just don't have much of a taste. I've had several plants that smelled great but tasted like nothing well others from the same batch of seeds tasted fantastic.

The only thing I would say is you dried the buds a little fast, typically you'd want a slower 7-10 days for the buds to be dry enough to put in jars and then a few more days of burping.

Or they weren't ready for the jars yet.
Sometimes if I jar them too soon they take longer to develop.

I'm an outdoor grower so keep that in mind...when harvest time comes here, late Oct, we take the plants and immediately hand buck the branches...then hand buck any leaves longer than 2 inches from bud...then cut the bud from the stalk..then into the shearline...then into those baskets you see in the veggie section of some grocery stores...only have about 500+ of them...lol...then put a single layer of bud per basket...cross stack the baskets into towers...put in back porch...turn the fan on, buy not at the baskets...then when properly dried...usually 7-10 days they go into 30 liter tubs with lids, by the strain, then add hygrometer to tubs and burp as necessary...when meters show me 60% its into ziplocks with 62% boveda packs...the big ones....by mid Dec I'll sample my buds...but this is coming from an ol' fart....things may be different for you...green growing!!!!

My bubble kush didn't have much of a smell or taste either, after only curing it for 3-4 days. I then waited a full 3 weeks of curing and the smell and taste were profoundly noticed. I was quite surprised.

The smoke will get smoother but flavor is not going to magically appear if it wasnt there to begin with.
The right strain will have flavor right off the drying rack with no cure.

I always strains when pheno hunting that don't taste well, usually they don't have a lot of smell as well. A buddy of mine used a term to describe strains like that, he called them " no no's." No smell, no taste.

I'm not big on taste. Smell maybe. I don't expect exotic flavors when I smoke. As long as it doesn't taste bad like dirt or something, then, it's fine with me if it doesn't taste like pineapple or fruity pebbles.

4 days is not long enough to dry.

Curing starts once the buds have stabilized at the humidity that you seek. (generally 62%). Its separate from the drying process.

Im a huge believer in taste. I think its my favourite thing about smoking it, and is a really good indicator for potency. It should taste almost the same as it smells.
Each to their own on dry, and cure. Mine dries for about 7-10 days after a trim. Then i start off the rest of the cure in big biscuit tins, before transfering to jars a week or so after. IMHO , 20'C is about the sweet spot.
I suppose its probably the only good thing about my cold climate. You can really cure it quite nicely.
I noticed smoke was smoother, when cured cooler.

I normally dry in a set up with a dehuey not blowing on the plant set at 65 this prevents any molds and helps everything dry even for me
Takes about a week to two to get to where i want to cure up

I dry in the dark as well i try to keep temps as low as i can as well

I agree that I dried them too fast. This was my first harvest so I am still learning and appreciate all the feedback!! I was planning on a 7 - 10 day dry, but after 3 days the buds felt dry to the touch and some of the smaller branches could be snapped, so I panicked and jarred the whole lot. I believe my drying setup has too much air flow and the humidy was too low as well like 30%, so the buds dried too fast. Since I was also planning on a 3 week cure in the jars, I wanted to make sure the buds didnt get too dry as you cant really re-hydrate a bud for curing. It seemed like I was OK as the initial humidity in the Jars was about 69%, so I started the burping process and have been working the humidty down in the jars slowly over the last 12 days - the are now at 66%, so I am hoping I am in the cure zone.

The day of harvest I scraped the resin off the scissors as we were trimming the bud. After we finished trimming, we smoked the resin - super smooth and a good high, but not much taste. I am looking forward to trying these again after 3 weeks in the jar!

I don't agree with this. I have some jarred buds I put away last October that are completely different (better) tasting than they were 4 months ago.

Now I know not everyone can hang onto buds as long as that, but they have most certainly "aged" for the better.

It intrigued me enough that I'm about to sacrifice some of my recent harvest for science.
I have a well made cedar humidor I'm going to age a half ounce in.
I'm expecting the wood to impart flavor and aroma to the bud ... for better or worse I'll find out.
I was going to add some aromatics to the box as well. Sanitize some tangerine peel with 100 proof vodka to kill any potential mold on the skin first.
No risk it ... no biscuit!

When I talk about flavor I am mostly referring to after flavor...for example, the way a joint of well grown OG/diesel/chem/bubba kush tastes on the exhale...some citrus strains have that too or a hashy blueberry. To me the after flavor is what distinguishes connoisseur grade flower from the rest. Some strains have it but majority of them dont and just taste like smoke. A pheno with good after flavor will taste good in a joint immediately after being dried proper. It is pretty much the main thing I select for when pheno hunting and I really dont keep anything that doesnt meet this criteria.

ive had this issue in the past and solved it by dry trimming instead of wet trimming. sometimes ill even leave the large fan leaves on to slow the dry process. it really helps stretch it out to 7 days and sometimes even longer depending on the conditions of the environment.

Ive found aswell, if i leave leaves during the dry, i get a leafy taste in my end product.
