Rockwool....

Question for all the growers, hopping someone has looked into this or tried it.
I grow in pro mix, about sick of it, not interested in coco. I miss the less mess of wool. But for how I’m growing , wool cubes from the store would over double medium costs. I just build a new veg room, and using rockwool fire n sound proof insolation.

What’s the difference between this insolation and growing rock wool?

I payed $60 bucks for this bag,
Probably about $500 worth from the hydro store.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I don't think the manufacturing process is any different. I'd imagine it's the same thing. I'm curious to see if anyone here has direct knowledge from industrial manufacturing side of it.

If i recall most building insulation is coated to make it hydrophobic but im not 100%on that

You can always run a few testers to make sure before your try a full crop

Before you build a new setup

Check this video out its how im going to try the next run except im makking some design tweaks

Hang on ill find it

Also if you look at i think grodans sight they say what the difference is but i would expect them to steer.you away from cheaper alternative

But it might also have something to do with the air flow in the micro pourus structure

A hydrophobic treatment would definitely make sense.

I know people (good people ) that use the hydroton that said i fucking hate the stuff lol

Rolls around everywhere clay dust everywhere.

Personally like grow stones after you rinse them once they dont keep dusting the water too bad.

Im going to be making a meniscus membrane nft set up like the one shown in the video
Except i want to find a way to not use the rockwool.

I have a few designs to test and then will make a big get up

Basically all i want to do is run bleach or hydrogen peroxide to clean the system and throw away the root ball

No media but also not full water culture so no chiller.no root rot (hopefully) no BIG circ pumps and air pumps are optional:)

After I made the thread , I did some tests
The insulation is very hydrophobic and there is no way to correct it.

I can’t use hydroton because I hand water
Looks like I’ll be staying in pro mix .

I started it when I just woke up,
When I seen it was flood n drain I lost interest , n went back to sleep.
I’ll watch it tonight,

I use to run FD now I have to stay legal and keep a low count.
I only flower 4 plants under a 1000
I need 10+ galllon pots to hit the numbers I want, as soon as I start making my root zone smaller i start making my buds smaller.
I’ve seen monster plants in 3g pots , I don’t have the room to run res n pumps with this perpetual, I need 10g of medium because I only check it once a day.

Way easier then pro mix in my opinion

I couldn't stand promix and switched to coco after 2 runs with it
But plenty love it and do great with it:)

Rockwool croutons sound perfect for you except the cost

I wanted to try running croutons in a dtw set up

Have you seen dr greentm setup?

I was making my own pro mix, but I don’t have time, easier to just get promix n add a little perlite . But it’s a mess.

I would use coco but it would increase my running costs and I really can’t see it increasing yeild.

I loved coco much more then promix due to promixes hydrophobic tendencies when dry (hate that shit)

I loved coco hated the mess and fungus gnats

Water culture ftw for me lol

93B6083F-9E45-4580-BBC5-C321A17585F7.jpeg I do think the croutons would be perfect for my setup, but it will add to the cost, but will be a lot cleaner . These pots n coco or promix = a mess. But I’m liking them.
I got 2 bags of promix left. Think I’ll switch it up after there done. I’m getting tired of being Cinderella on my hands n knees scrubbing the floor.

Those pots look like they are made for croutons lol

I really want to try them too but i dont want to add to grow cost anymore i wana make it cheap and efficient lol
