Vegging allows the plant to mature and grow some branches/bud sites. The longer you let it veg, the larger the plant will be and the more bud you will end up with.

You should let it veg until its 1-2 feet tall.

Height is a factor too.. when you put it into flower, it will double or triple in size depending on the strain

I put mine into flower at about 14", and 6 weeks later, they're at about 44"

HPS is the way to go when flowering.

Be sure to buy a back-up bulb, just in case . . . so you don't have an issue that would leave you in the dark. Be careful not to outgrow your lighting. If the bottom growth isn't gonna get much light, think about removing it? This would send the growth towards the top, where you want it.

removing?
... as in clearing out the bottom of the plant like leaves and all?

>_>

right now i have the plant about an inch or so away from a 20 led lamp

and so far the plant is doing greattt and at times to make up for the heat ( i like it really cold in my room but in the south its hot) i put her inside this giant display case my mom has in the living room that has some hot incandescents and i leave it in there for a bit but never for a long time...

Yeah. Lots of growers grab clones from down there when they remove the entire lower stems from the lower 1/3 of the main stalk. It's not done by everyone. It's just that if it gets too think and bushy down there, no one wants to kiss it, err, I mean growth may be poor and the buds there small, in a vertical grow. Depends on your lighting.

I veg under regular fluro's and after about a foot, the bottoms trash in the end, so I should remove it.
Plus, that's right where mites get a foothold.
