Nifty! I've found that the oxygenation with airstones and pump and circulation pump aren't necessary; the NFT system itself provides all the oxygen needed.

Im trying to figure out a way to do nft so it will bd media less but also have a way to pull early finishing strains out without disturbing the rest

Some way of container the root but keeping them happy and mobile lol

Just cut the stem and haul out the early finishers.

I’ve had to pull early ones out of the tray and I keep some of the lower portion (larf) just to keep the root ball alive. Not the perfect solution but it works.

Nice thread, glad to be here. I wish I had that much room to work with, I will someday. Looking good man, love the setup. The more I think about it the more likely it is I will switch to rockwool and blumat drippers before anything else.

I just read of an issue using blue mats in that the slow steady feed rate, with no run off, has a tendency to build up salts in the media. A periodic flush of the media by hand would be solution, I would think though.

Ive done that in my nfts and dwcs not ideal but it works but i hate doing it cause when you cut off so much plant the roots tend to die back some


With this system im wanting it to be like semi self contained but it will run off of one res for now

Im imagining somthing with 3 gallon buckets
Stacked in a tray so when im ready i just out the bucket out give it a scrub and throw a new plant in there pop the bucket back in and not muss a beat
The hard part is figuring out how to run it media less

I drain the reservoirs, I use two in a loop, a couple times per run and run RO for a week. Salt buildup is definitely a problem, both in the dripper lines and the media, if one does not manage it actively. I also water individual plants by hand, when I see any sign of it.

I could see that happening, i water extra once a week, to check the runoff to avoid this. Let’s you catch problems before they are problems.
Just noticed a tester crop wasn’t using as much as I was giving them. But they looked like they where not getting enough.

I don’t have any problems, myself, but that’s because I keep an eye on it. I had a couple floods early on, and now everything is in overflow trays, but I havent had any problems in over a year.
It is a very small amount of maintenance.

RDWC is the way to go, then. Roots come out of water like no other medium.
