In a non related idea...I think Lucky Luke is AOK. Maybe it is because we are Canadian/Australian. We get each other mate eh. :D
I think I must of hurt Matys feelings in another thread awhile ago and it must still hurt him so here he is badly trolling.

Canadians and ozzies are very similar in our outlook on life I recon.

promix is mostly peat moss, with a little coco, and a light dusting of perlite, depending on which mix you get, they have several varieties.
its what i use instead of the vermiculite. it holds water a little better, but still doesn't get really bogged down unless you use too much, thats why i keep it at 20%.
In your opinion is wicks better or retains better than Vermiculite? My understanding is Perlite has a wicking capacity of about 8inches upward. Would the ProMix increase that more than the Vermiculite, or just retain more moisture?

i'm sure it would retain more moisture. i know the surface of it will stay moist for at least a whole day after you water it, not sure if thats wicking from the bottom or just retention

I find automatic feed systems are far more reliable than I am.

When running pump(s), light(s), etc with timers it is best to use relays to avoid timer failure. A 40 amp 12 vdc coil activated relay will run about $5 Canadian at an automotive/hardware/tool shop. I use plug in adapters to turn on the relay and I plug the adapter into the timer. Run the hot side of the light, pump, etc through the relay contacts, insulated crimp on lugs work nicely. With this setup, any cheap digital timer will work. High amperage digital timers are expensive.

I've also found that aluminum pie pans can be used for drip rings if necessary. Cut an appropriate hole in the center of the pan and cut a slot for the plant. poke the bottom of the pan with pin holes and curve the cut edges up so the pan holds the water and allows the water to go through the pin holes. Situate the pan level and put a feed hose to it.

Aquarium stores usually have nice little pumps at affordable prices.

At the start of an unknown grow, a person actually has to be there to ensure everything is going correct, but after a bit it becomes known and timers can be properly set...so the equipment can be gotten a bit at a time. Not a large rush. A small single pump grow, between $75-$100, so you you can stay late playing cards with the boys, and don't got to run home at 9:30 PM every night, people notice these little things. After a while a person realizes their freedom is well worth the hundred bucks :) and before you know it, you've saved so much money from not buying weed, you got real drip rings.

I usually veg for 6 weeks,I can't have too big because of a 2 1/2 oz limit. It used to take 8 weeks to get the same size in soil.
"We Don't Like No Stinkin Limits" hate that you have limits where you are. Hopefully someday the world will see Cannabis for the positive it really is.

And Aussies do say eh but its more of a question.

"Good game eh?"

and Yeah.

"You doing well yeah?'

Being such a multi cultural society we use lots of Countries vernaculars.

Could you explain hempy buckets to me, if you want I'll ask in another thread but I used to use what's known as passive Hydroponics and the vermiculite was what would do most of the wicking up through the lecca, so are hempy buckets similar or is there a top feeding involved I'm just not clear thanks

* I went to the pinned thread and read there but I couldn't quite understand what this whole thing is about there either thanks

From your description I would say they are primarily the same. Hempy as I understand is the process of watering through the a selected growing medium into a reservoir at the bottom of growing container. Once the reservoir is full the remainder if drained off through a hole in the side as waste. I think originally the thought was 3/1 Perlite/Vermiculite, but many had adapted to different ratios and materials combined with Perlite. My understand is the Perlite is the wicking material and anything else is used to retain moisture. Hope that helps. I first just googled Hempy and came up with several examples and tutorial videos.

Yes it did thanks, I kind of got that idea but I wasn't sure. In passive hydroponics the reservoir had an air stone and would be refilled/changer as needed, thanks again!

How do you stop algae in the runoff container? ..if I had a space with no plant I would put black plastic back in my Sea of Green's, I'm guessing maybe something like that with this? And how deep do you usually keep the water in the runoff?

Sorry for so many questions but this is totally new to me and I'm very interested because it sounds a lot like passive Hydroponics which is a Great but underrated way to grow, particularly for sea of green Growers

Was looking for a link to any hempy thread with a lot of pictures, easy for me to see a picture and understand -thanks in advance if anyone knows of one?

Algae won’t grow as fast if the runoff container is black. I just do a periodic cleaning of mine as they will get nasty

I have a rack which my buckets sit upon. Below the rack is a tray used to catch the runoff. I generally shoot for 10% runoff, but any is good IME. I stick a probe into the res hole in the bucket to determine if they need water or not. Unless it is at least 50% empty I don't bother. This puts me at about everyday to every other day in veg. In flower that's out the window. They drink.... alot.
I mix up their juice 10gal at a time in a trashcan with airstones in it. Keep a ph meter floating in the res to mind the ph. I visit them every morning. Give 'em a drink if they need it. Otherwise, I try and stay outta their way.
