OK, let me give this a shot. I'm using LED strips rather than Quantum boards, but I think the results tend to be similar. Anyway, my mainlined plant I grew late last year probably had the most uniform, decent sized buds on her - here is a pic about 3 weeks before harvest:
No reflective walls makes it harder, but you can compensate for that with side lighting. If I was going to setup a 5x5 in an open area, I would illuminate it from the top with 600 watts of QB's @ 75W each or 600W of Samsung F-strips, 44" single row strips @40 watts each, and then add 100W of strips for side lighting on all four sides for 1000 watts total.

I dont really understand stuff like ppfd, umol etc led speak. Or how to wire stuff. Building something is beyond me. I know my weaknesses lol! But i know if i can get a light that works (afford the prebuild price tag) i know enough about plants and training to pull good stuff at the end.It'll preform.
My mate just took down a 4 x 8 tent with 3 HLG 550s, last week. Plants are drying Operation is shut down for a holiday. So there's no pics

He's a 1500 ppfd across the canopy type of guy .....with co2 lol
I prefer 900 umols across my grows and it does the biz for me.
As @coreywebster was saying, you can go for one big feck off main cola or top the plant and have several medium colas. Also depends on what strain you're growing.
Big colas round these parts are bud rot waiting to happen. I much prefer medium ones.
@growingforfun, have you thought about doing a strip build?
1350 watts you say or around 50 watts per Sq ft? That's too rich for me.
With these mid power leds people are getting good results with 30 - 40 watts sq ft.

So im going Xmas tree style with a qb 288, how big could i expect my buds to get without all of the problems that I have had? My nl/big bud auto is going to be a dud, i think... It came out at the same time as my auto skunk... Then there's the baby... She's still growing!!! Cfls are just there doing nothing, I don't use them...

Hey Frank, that's an impossible question to answer,. It looks like its been through the wars alright and that's going to play a big part in the end product. The internode spacing isn't bad on that pic at the top so if it all fills out like it should then you should get a chunky monkey. I have never even looked at an auto in real life though never mind grown one, all I know is they do what they want and you get what your given. That's why I use photo periods, they bend to my will and everything that grows does so according to my design.
