Lighting for 2-3 plants?

I've done my fair share of reading, but lighting is still a little fuzzy.

I'm planning to pick up some good seeds, but grow 2-3 plants for my first few times. I'm thinking a 400W HPS is going to cover my situation, and because atm I'm young and poor I plan to use this single light for both my veg. and flowering stages (not the best, but hey what can i do). So will the HPS do the job?

Also, how much is a small fixture + the 400W going to cost me, and how much do you think it's going to run the bill up, I wouldn't think it'd be to bad with 18/6, and 12/12.

Thanks.

A 400 Watt hps will do the trick. Plan on spending at least 150 for the light. as far as electricity goes, who knows.

Bleh. Alright well atleast if nothing else I can shoot for the best in my situation , but I'm just afraid to use compact flourenent, even though they're a shitload cheaper it's probably not worth it.

Now, I've gotta start savin' up atleast $100+ without blowin it on weed

400 * 18 * 0.06 = 456
456 / 1000 = 0.456 a day

0.456 * 30 = roughly $13.68 a month for the light

... your going to need more than 100 bucks, you will need around 250 to 300 for an HPS set up, thoes ballasts are expensive.

High Tech Garden Supply probably has the best deal for a 400, it's only $120 and has everything you need. I hate those damn eBay ones because they either charge you $50 for shipping or they don't include everything on purpose.
