Decarboxylation Decarbing Question . Does it even matter ?

So I've been experimenting with edibles for a good 6 months now with varied results from some pretty average product.

Now here's the million dollar question that I ask my self every time I watch a youtube video about.
Whats the point of been so specific with decarbing then next minute you just cook it however you like ?

Everyone says you have to be so accurate during the decab stage. Don't burn it, don't over cook it , has to be exactly 105degrees for exactly 30 minutes blah blah blah... If yo don't do anything of those things 100% you'll ruine any of the THB goodness etc. BUT THEN

Everyone takes that butter, and uses it on Toast ( cooked for 1 minute at pretty high etc) then some bake with it ( low temps for a long time), some people use it in coffee, some people use it in the slow cooker or for mac and cheese.. SO...

Why do you have to be so specific with the decarbing when I'm assuming all the above methods decarbs it slightly more or less ... ?

Short answer if you are cooking it; it generally doesn't need to be decarbed in advance. IMO. If I was making oil for say a tincture, to mix with alcohol or for any "cold" use, then you must decarb it. For me that typically looks like taking the raw plant material and drying it as I dont want any water in my extraction and it decarbs during that heating/drying stage. The amount of raw material, its water content and the efficiency of your oven will all be factors in terms of how long you decarb for. I do my extracts this way for the sake of simplicity and expediency. This way I know my oil is decarbed and can be used for anything, tinctures, candy, brownies etc or just slick it on a paper. The candy is probably the best example, as you dont add your oil until the last stage when the mixture is cool enough to work with so you must decarb to get full effect.

Yeah I have found the biggest factor been what you start with, if its good it will be potent if its rubbish it won't give you much effect. Where as the Decarbing however you do it as long as you do it in some form seems to be a low second.

I've been testing the AVB or ABV which ever way you call it, to me that def still is better making sure its got that extra 20-30 decarb. the short amount of time it spends in the vape doesn't seem to convert the the THA left on the plant.

Yeah, not so much really imo, the lower quality source material really only affects the final yield, ie I need 5x the amount of shake as I would flower to end up with the same extract yield.

ABV "alcohol by volume" ?

If you are vaping it, decarboxylation should be taking effect (I normally set my vaporizer to 220c). There is THCA locked up inside the plant cells that vaping will not reach, but the vast majority of the cannabinoids rest within the trichomes on the exterior of the plant matter.

After Bud Vape or After vaped bud. Mines on 392 or 200 C same as yours, I first try a whole bud give that a few goes and then take it out grind it up by fingers and then its good for another few goes. It seems to get the most out of it this way rather than just grinding. But yeah pretty much anything that is vaped in my opinion is almost not worth cooking with, its even worse than sugar leaves.

Ive tried straight eating the AVB or mix it with oil and its rubbish, almost no effect at all ( I don't care how many people say they have been knocked off their socks on non decarbed avb ) It def needs that extra session in the oven.

I use my PVB in my brownies and it works great. My PVB has been thru the Pax 2 and looks quite "done" when it is used. See my brownie recipe in a separate post using poor/mid grade home grown and doubling or tripling the added THC components by using whole ground decarbed weed along with the PVB and Canibutter all made from the same white widow home grown low level stuff. By this method a cubic inch of the finished product matches us with any "black out" 1000mg. brownie I've ever had! Try IT!

You do have to have a lot of finished bud to make my brownies but I found a great use for last years weakened harvest (fungus gnats, caterpillars and early flowering do to a light timing issue). So I used an ounce to make the butter (but this batch goes into four batches of brownies) and I can't count the PVB because it was just recycling the leftovers. Then another full ounce of decarbed bud directly in the batter. But I had to vape two grams to get a good dose of last years harvest (I harvest for high CBD values by 50% amber tricomes) so using it up in this way with brownies made with all three components made for one KICK ASS brownie with one cubic inch enough for a strong 6 hour effect. I'm disabled by Ankylosing Spondylitis (the hunchbacks disease) and on pain meds since a little boy. I'm a high dose guy what with all the meds that have been thru me. I can tell you for sure if you follow my recipe you will be knocked over with the result. I wish I could send you a chunk!! But be careful with it! My 27 year old son gave my 16 year old grand daughter about a cubic inch of it without my knowing. And this right before a big family gathering. She was basically comatose for about 6 hours. We had to carry her out of the restaurant! OHHH did I ever get some heat for this, even though I didn't give it to her! So I reiterate; BE CAREFUL! AND HAVE FUN!

also depends on what you're cooking. brownies may be cooked in a 300 degree oven, but the interior of the brownies never get much over 200 degrees.
That's why I decarb first, controlling the temp throughout the process never to get the material over about 250' F. I don't think cooking alone decarbs the material well enough as the heat inside the material is not uniform and cannot off gas the water vapor. You will have better result if you decarb before cooking, and if your material is weak then by all means supplement with PVB and cannibutter. Plus straight weed into the batter is going to leave you with a pretty bad tasting and texture brownie. (I picture a cow chewing on its cud!) My PVB is granular and crunchy and helps with the texture of the brownie. The decarbed bud, after osterizing to nearly a powder blends into the batter much better than raw grass would. The added vanilla and almond extract mask the grass taste. I'm even going to add some of the alcohol extracted oil to my next batch for a four element super kick ass blackout brownie! TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT!

ha ha so what you are saying is that the PVB is probably having very minimal effect on the brownies and its basically just the bud in the recipe doing all the work :P I would agree with that :) I do love the idea of having all 3 in the mix though , fresh bud, decarbed bud and PVB how can you go wrong with that mixture !

No way you have Ankylosing Spondylitis ? My dad has had it since he was 18 after trying to lift a motorbike after an accident !. That is a horrible horrible thing to have which basically renders you unable to lift anything heavy again depending how bad it is. Do you have and fused disks ? One of my old bosses got that surgery where they just fuse the damaged disks together which means you obviously can't bend over still but it stopped a lot of the pain for him at least.

I'd love to try it ha ha, let me know next time your in brisbane and we can have a bake off lol,
I always feel bad about putting any fresh buds into cooking just because I know that littte bud would have me lit all day in the vape, where as im probably not getting the most out of it putting it straight into cooking :(

Yes it really matters, within certain parameters. I do my buds and shake at 225F for 55 minutes. After that you can cook with it at higher temps. But baking brownies at 350F before decarbing is a buzz kill.

Yes, I have A.S. (the Hunchback's Disease) diagnosed at age 11. Your father did not get it from lifting. That was what helped the doctor to diagnose it. Mine was diagnosed after my complaints of hip pain from playing ice hockey was restricting my skating and the pain encroaching on my sleep. A.S. is an autoimmune disease one contracts thru your blood line. You cannot "catch it" or get it from any action of your own. It is a form of arthritis that is basically different by what happens to the swelling discs. They calcify, that is turn to bone and fuse together. Your main nerves run thru the spine. Many nerves can be pinched by the encroaching calcification into the channels which is what causes the pain. In the worst cases they fuse into the bent over hunched back the disease is named for. Yes fusing discs can help, my brother has had this done but of course this restricts your movement which is what the disease does in the first place so it is a last resort for pain management. I maintain my healthy stature with careful diet and daily stretching and daily exercise (no matter how you feel or the weather NO EXCUSES). see pic. I am determined to never become hunch backed and have maintained a healthy body all my life. I even managed to win a national championship as a marathon and ultra marathon speed inline skater (Master's class 1991) and got a pro sponsor. I don't recommend speed skating after dosing with marrijuana unless you're fond of road rash!

I’m really new to this myself. Last night was the second time I’ve decarbed and made cannabutter and it’s been a home run both times. This morning I woke up and took it out of the fridge and skimmed it and spread just a tiny bit on a toasted English muffin and I’m straight up lit.
