Hey I'm just about finishing my first flush of mushrooms, got a few questions though.

Does anyone have good teks for taking mycelium from a substrate and putting in to a culture vial ? I've seen online people talk about scraping mycelium or some covered grains and putting it in a jar with water and shaking it up, extracting into a culture vial - Or would it be better taking spore prints ?

Also, is it possible to take the cake from a kit I bought of golden teachers and transfer it to a bulk tote ? I have some verm and perlite what else would I need? I'm aware of the bulk teks I'm just wondering if I take the spent cake and pour cold water on it THEN break It up and colonise... I'm not too sure...

One last Q - when I was aerating the bag for the kit I bought I got a little overzealous and a side shroom popped off, I carefully took it out and put it to one side. Was that the right thing to do? The things about an inch long, I hear they're potent when smaller (in comparison to weight) so should I take it easy?

Hoping to use shrooms medically so low micro doses is what I am after here. Any info on that would be appreciated too. So far 0.25mg every 4 days is what I've seen mentioned.

Thanks everyone

JDM,
Just wanted to bump your thread. I'm not up on the kit you purchased. I used spore syringe to innoculate jars and once fully colonized...just dump into bin and mist. Each extra step increases risk of contamination I would think.

Definitely make spore prints. They keep forever.

And yes...the little ones tend to be stronger. But since you're micro-dosing I wouldn't worry.

I haven't heard of medical use for shrooms. For what purpose, if you don't mind my asking.

Don't microdose pins, they can be pretty strong. Est 5x
Spent cakes are for the garden.
Thanks for the correction PSDaddi...never ate the little pins before. I used to hike out to a pasture near me in north Fl...find and eat a few finger size unopened ones (tastier) and hang out under the trees and trip with the cows.

Hey john thanks for the reply. I previously bought rye bags, some b+ spores and culture vial, inoculated but wasn't aware that the spawn and rye touching the filter would be an issue (saw a bad youtube video that suggested it) so I saw lots of black inside and expected contamination and left them alone..

To get ahead I bought a XL kit from mushroom grow shop of golden teachers. Just wanted to go to fruiting hence the short cut.

Well this little guy was about an inch long, i decided to go steady and try .5 at a time because I just wanted to prepare and see what a higher dose would be like. Have to say I had a very uplifting experience after 1.5g.. And a little thc.

Third wave.co has a great write up, you should check that out for the medicinal benefits it lists there!

Hi psych thanks for the reply. As above I did do more than micro dose this time round and had a wonderful experience. Thanks for your reply and as such I took it really slow.

I didn't realise that was the case. When I see people talk about flushes I assumed that the mycelium reverted bag to the colonisation process. I thought I'd be able to take the cake and expand it using more medium. Is that incorrect?

Maybe I'll take spawn prints this time. Has anyone got any good write ups/how to's for me to look at? I'm Googling some now in the meantime

JDM,
Glad you had a nice little trip...I'm envious.

And thanks for the link...will def check it out.

Decades ago, in an absolutely serendipitous series of events, one friend brought me a bag of mushrooms freshly harvested...and another guy, a new friend...only hours later, brought me his copy of McKenna's talking book True Hallucinations. These guys did not know one another...pure coincidence.

What was a guy to do? I ate the mushrooms and listened to the tapes. A fairly hair raising experience and I daresay it changes my outlook forever.
Cheers,
JD

What I think you are talking about is either a liquid culture or liquid innoculant either of which are typically started from an agar culture in a Petri dish. Research agar on the shroomery. It is a more controlled way of growing.
You can start growing the myc on agar with spores from a print you made or an ms syringe and then make a simple liquid innoculant by dropping the fully colonized agar puck into a jar of sterilize water. Then use the LI to innoculate grains or whatever. A liquid culture is different; it's sterile water and a source of sucrose like honey or corn syrup. You grow the myc in the liquid for a few weeks in the fridge and then inject it onto grains or whatever.
Taking spore prints is super easy; heres a link to help you...

You can shred up the cakes with a cheese grater and spawn it to a bulk substrate in a tray or something. Then fruit in a shotgun chamber. Search for links on this; it's a fairly common thing. I suggest doing a bulk tub using grains because it takes a shit-ton of cakes to make enough spawn for an average size tub. Either way you'll need a brick of coco coir and some verm and optionally some gypsum for substrate. Coir is very easy to work with and cheap AF.
Try to pick your shrooms as soon as the veils break which is like peak potency. Smaller shrooms are not stronger; psilocybin is distributed throughout the entire flesh of the mushroom so it really comes down to how many grams you consume.

Well I can only put those events down to mushroom fate :D I have heard of Terence McKenna and I'm yet to look into any of his work, but I've seen the podcasts with his brother on joe rogans show, I can't say they didn't ingluence ME to try them in the first place. Supposedly a dark room and laying on a bed is a great experience.

Glad you enjoyed it! Have a safe and happy journey :)

Hey thanks for the response. I'm thinking I'd need a still air box to be able to make any use of working with agar reliably..? Maybe an investment for a future time. The stress of trying to keep my kit contaminant free whilst fanning and misting is enough by itself without growing mold too lol.

I've used spores before to transfer to a liquid culture vial, I didn't keep it in the fridge though, I thought it was supposed to be kept in a room temp dark space like a cupboard, which is what I did. Is that incorrect?

I just harvested them, some of the veils had broken but I didn't really see any black spores drop. I have some pictures of what I got, and also what's left in the kit (tiny pins) should I have picked them too or let them carry on to maturity before I try for another flush?

Thanks

Pins left after harvest.

A lot of them stuck together, one had split, but I think I pulled at the right time? I'm unsure lol.

JDMase,
Any yield for a noob is success. You also should go for a second flush too. zNothing to lose.

And just as a FIY...loads of schroom stuff on 'Bay. Just try different terms. mycelium jars, spore print or even cubensis

Because of the nature of McKenna's work...much of it has been psychedelized. Voice modulation...flash photog...that sort of thing. But if you can find "True Hallucinations" that's a good place to start.

Some will grow larger and some may not. Watch and see what they do. After the veils break spores will drop soon after; you got them at the peak looks like. They will drop black all over. The thing about bulk grows is no more fanning and misting; monotubs are set it and forget it. What variety is that btw? PE?
Wish I could give you advice but I can't really comment on liquid culture; never tried it. You may have more success starting with agar. That way you have several options for backup plans if things go south. Spore prints are usually very dirty unless you take them yourself but with agar you can isolate the myc from the contams. Agar work is very easy too; it looks harder than it actually is. You do need a SAB but you can DIY one for less than $10.
The secret to improving your sterile tek inside a SAB is to use a solution of 10% bleach and water & then drip in some dish soap. Spray that all over the walls of your SAB and don't even wipe it off, leave it soapy and then give it a few mins to settle. Re-spray as needed to keep the walls soapy; contams will stick to the walls instead of your jars and whatnot. Elevate whatever you are working with off the floor of the SAB; this will prevent like 90% of contams.

I disagree.... Once you have Trichoderma it spreads very fast in your house. and then you can forget about growing shrooms.
Proper mushroom technique should hold this off...

...and Tricioderma is the most widely known fruiting fungus and is present in ALL soil so hard to point fingers at a source...and if so... bad technique will get you every time.
