Hello friends! It's time for me to get a hard lesson-learning...

Can anyone help me identify what is up with this recent purchase ? It's a supply I've gotten from a trusted friend I've bought many great times from before, but this time I can't help but question things...

I asked about it and he says he's getting it from a new guy, but assures me it's a better punch. Either I've smoked myself invincible to the magic herbs, or this is not that great.

The evidence, seen in the accompanying pictures, shows that the material in question is sticky, being delivered in a sort-of "brick" shape, and when cut with scissors, tends to snip as if cutting through play-dough. The other picture shows a piece of the cut clump that has been squashed down flat by myself, to show the 'consistency' of the material.

It leaves a strong aftertaste of ash/ass and the flavour of finishing a cigarette. It also has a rather harsh scent; I can't quite place it, but it makes me think of a garage mixed with a hint of cow barn.

Initial analysis of the substance in question, ingested orally via one (expertly crafted blunt, if I do say so myself), produced not the results previously encountered from past tests; while the effects were noticeable, it was the aftertaste that seemed to reduce the effects, sadly. It resided for some time after the test was completed, resisting many attempts to flush it with water; a strikingly poignant taste, so strong it could almost be detected by the nose.

In conclusion, that was a really long way of saying that, to me, this is not good. Any ideas as to what's up or what can be done with it? I've got a rather sizable store of bagseed I'm experimenting with while waiting for my properly-designed grow cabinet to be built (running into issues with supplies/cost), but once everything is ready for construction, I'll be starting a grow diary, if anyone would be interested in following my (sorry) 'budding' interest in my journey through this green wonderland.

...but seriously, that's Mexican Cartel brick and was probably decent smoke before being mishandled. It probably has a smell of cut grass mixed with ammonia from being basically uncured when packed and anaerobic decomposition. Best thing you can do is fluff it and let it get completely bone dry, then put it in a ziplocr with a piece of bread to rehydrate it a little.

I smoked a lot of that shit thanks to Nancy Reagan.

Thank you for the response. You have pretty well identified the smell! My biggest concern is after the proper steps are completed, will it be a decent burn? Will the smell/taste still prevail , and if so, can I adjust that with some sort of additive?

In my experience the smell and taste will never be great but getting it bone dry will stop the anaerobic bacteria from making it worse. The ammonia smell can hit growers too if they don't properly dry before starting the cure but correcting it early on usually makes it undetectable. I'm not sure what to do about it if it goes uncorrected for too long.

At any rate, a big part of the taste issue comes from poor/no curing. I think the really objectionable taste will subside with drying but you will be left with a very "green" tasting smoke with a hint of glass cleaner. All honesty though, if you smoke medically, to keep yourself grounded throughout the day as I do, that'll work. It isn't tasty top shelf, but if a little THC keeps you from punching co-workers, smoke away.

In my experience you can't undo the crunchy, hard burning state of that stuff. However it probably never got any fertilizer in the first place so it won't be as bad as some totally unflushed weed but expect similar issues... hard burning, shit tasting. Maybe use a water pipe with some lemon juice or mint extract in the water.

I honestly posted that first pic just to encourage you to overcome the obstacles keeping you from growing. I myself am what a lot of people would call a "broke ass mother fucker" but I am also pretty good at repurposing stuff. I think the most help we could give you at this point would be to know more about where you will put a grow cabinet, how much space you have, what type of lighting your design calls for.... and for us to get you growing, my man!

Thank you, Srirachi! I left the herb out overnight and it is practically crispy, but it needs a little more.

I really appreciate the help and motivation! It's something I can really use; it's for medical reasons that I use the stuff (wonderfully contradictory mental illness...), but I've been a recreational enjoyer of it for years.

As for my cabinet, a lot of it has been put on hold, sadly... With me being out of work for mental health reasons, my wife's income is all there is. And right now, even the more basic materials are hard to get a hold of. But, I will definitely be pushing hard to get all I need somehow! This is a bit of money now, but it will save a lot in the future!

I have too many ideas for this project, and I think that with the time I have before construction can begin, I'll draft up some 'blueprints' and share them here, so that you and all the other fine members can (hopefully) offer up suggestions and advice!

Despite still having to re-moisturize the bud, I was in need this morning and rolled a bit. The taste was considerably more tolerable, and the aftertaste hasn't been all that harsh, either.

I was thinking about the rehydration process with the bread... If, for example, the bread were infused with something as a flavour (one example I thought of was vanilla in the extract form), would that flavour and aroma work its way into the herb as well?

O&M, Believe me, I feel ya on the money issue. But, I absolutely guarantee you that you and I could spend a day and $25 gathering everything you need for a stealth grow. Currently I'm using 2 ceiling light fixtures from someone's garbage can (when I see a home flip renovation being done, I dumpster dive. It's like winning the lottery for me). Loaded them with CFLs (that I got for free for attending the monthly REMC customer meeting) and it makes up a great vegging chamber.

This box is made of scrap plastic, and garbage bin light sockets, and free light bulbs. Computer fans from a 1996 computer (no joke it was a 386sx processor) provide cooling when I need it. The screws and bolts I had but would cost $5 at Lowes. I think you could run some autos in this thing and get a half z every couple months.

Hope I'm not seeming to pressure you my friend. I feel for your situation though as a medical user myself and I want to see you freed of the pressures of worrying that your bud is going to do the trick - trying to afford it - settling for less than the care you deserve. I'll stop trying to convince you now lol but seriously, you can build a stealth grow cab with scrap if you have to, and I can help you find scrap if you want. For instance- concrete pouring usually means free plywood that evening. Good, thick 1" plywood sometimes. They use it for forms and throw it away as often as not... every shelf in my garage has a little cement on the bottom!

The answer I hear is yes. The scent of whatever you put in to re-moisturize the bud sometimes transfers to the bud. I grow (med card) and whenever my hygrometer says lower than 60 RH I remove a fan leaf from my plant and "re moisturize." I wouldnt put bread in there because it can mold easily.

I was actually planning to do a small grow from crap around the house, but there is a lot that's been going on and that I'm going through, so all that is kinda back burner for now, sadly. I've got enough stuff to set up a small space (and I should probably do so soon, or else face the increasing peer pressure lol).

I have a lot of 'free time' with the wife and kid away for a few days, so if I can muster up enough of a collaboration of parts to seem worthy of a Srirachi fabrication ), I'll do some sketches and post them for comments, suggestions and ridicule

Man, for years, I've been smoking; being the age of 37, I've had many years of experiences - good and bad. I thought I knew enough to be a gardener... And then the internet kicked me in the face.

There is SOOOOOO much more to this than just the simple seed in dirt theory! While that basic method will work, there are so many ways of perfecting the art! The hardest part about getting started, at least for me, is the fact I'm a damn perfectionist about everything... Grrrrrr lol

Something that would definitely be a benefit is to get a set answer about how much space a single plant would need in a stealth grow setting. I've heard people say anything from 1'x1' to as big as one closet for a plant. Am I right in assuming that it can be adjusted to grow in pretty much any space, as long as the right preparation and training is achieved? (I guess this kind of thing is better discussed on another thread...)

I am a super noob to growing, tho I am not one to jump into a project without research. I spent many moons on this site, plus lots of others for cross-referencing, and I do see that while LEDs do show benefits in some areas, they aren't all the same and, in my opinion, some may even be outperformed by CFLs.

I'm not saying that I don't prefer the LEDs; I do, due to the hydro cost, temperature and placement features. It's just that I feel if I'm going to use LEDs, it has to be in a way that appeals to me. I see all the different LED grow lights out there, and the discussions about red to blue ratios, lumen this and capacity that, cool and warm light... If red, white and blue (Go USA - from a Canadian) are the important spectrums, why don't I just go get specific red, white and blue (Again... Go USA) floodlights that match the specific spectrums and use those? I've got two small 500 w halogen work lights - can I use them for growing, and if so, how do I set them up?

AHHH!!! So many questions!! So much stress!! Excuse me while I relax....

I would tell him not to buy from that person ever again. I've gotten stuff like this before that was was almost black looking and had some dude claiming it was "bomb shit" even tried to claim it was "purp" when it was clearly uncured reg that was wet as fuck still. New connect for sure, there is way too much awesome bud out there to be buying this imo. Good luck!
