OKIE here.
Excited to be in the land of cultured folk.
Need medicine grow on a continual basis.

I have a 3 ft by 4 ft area NEXT to the water heater in a closet in the garage.

During the peak summer it's gonna be hot.
However,
My heater doesn't seem to be putting off heat; at least when I'm checking it.
I have a thermostat in there and it reads constant 80 F.
(Which is cooler than the garage outside the closet....)
Anyway, this is my ONLY option for a grow room so I gotta make the best of it.

I plan on putting a sheet metal divider betwixt the water heater and grow zone.
Might even insulate the divider w spray foam.
Also gonna cover all the walls w sheet metal for reflective surface and fire proofing.

Question 1:
I plan on using LEDs and leaving door closed.
How hot is too hot in that room?

Question 2:
What AUTO strains are best in high temps?

Question 3:
How many plants can do well in a 3x4 ft area?

Question 4:
I was planning on using 5 gallon buckets and moving a few plants directly out to the back 40 as they get established.
What size containers do you suggest?

Looking for maximum yield, least pain for a noob.

Anyway you can put a window ac in that closet wall? as you add even LED's its going to get hotter... You are kinda at the max max you would want to be and a bit warm at that for end of flower. Earlier on its not as vital to have it cool... But finishing you want max of upper 70s and you add lights to that room and temp will go up. I like the idea of metal for some firestop but plain sheet metal not the best reflective. Once u have it up cover it in white panda film or paint it with FLAT white paint, the best stuff the stuff designed for roofs... flat white would be far more reflective than the plain sheet metal.

I have no auto advice for you, never grew one... So that counts me out on plant count too as I have no clue on size of autos... If you were doing photoperiod I'd say 1 trained plant or 2-3 untrained plants.

80+ is fine as long as your containers are large enough. I do 4 10 gallon pots in a 4x4. You could squeeze 4 into your space depending on how much you veg.
Strip led diy builds don't tend to throw out a lot of heat. When I switched, I went from ac to a heater.

Good point! Yes root temp is more important than plant temp... I've even thought at times about trying to split my room horizontally so I can keep roots cooler and plants warmer.

I'm still concerned tho with any light already at 80 you could easily be at 90 without too many watts of light...

You would do best to take full advantage of the cooler Fall/Winter temperatures in Oklahoma. If the grow room gets too cool in the Winter you can always add a reptile heater bulb which will not affect flowering.

You aren't dumb, you just haven't had the chance to screw up as much as the rest of us have yet

A plant in true outdoor conditions, planted in old terra firma, can handle more ambient heat because the roots are kept cooler in the ground. The mass of the earth disperses more heat than 5,10, or even 100 gallon container ever could... But yea you may want to hold out till cool down as if it gets to 110 ambient that little room gunna be tough to grow in....

Just checked the old water heater closet as wife just took a bath.

With heater running it was 82 F.
However; The garage itself is 85 F.

I'm thinking MAYBE this closet will work out to be the perfect temp thru the cooler months.
It might just be too dang hot in the summer though.

I was going to start my grow around middle of September after my medical card comes in.
By October it might be fine.

I concur.... If its hot in there still early in her life keep the RH up... High temp and low RH is bad for growth and stressful... But closer to the end of her life say mid flower on you have to drop the RH even if it causes some stress due to the heat... Ideally, you won't have to deal with high temp but if you do that would be my best advice to mitigate the problem the best you can

Humidity isn't something we have trouble creating in the Sooner state.
Mind you; the shape of the state itself looks like a boiling pot with a fire under it....

I think I can do this though.
