LED for a single plant closet

First grow and I've spent the last few weeks reading up on lighting, but with so much info... I'm almost as lost as when I started! So here is my simple plan: 1x plant, maybe an auto, SOG, 40x40x40x120cm tent, hempy bucket. Nope, I don't have more space, just this closet for now. LED seems right to avoid heat problems. If we ignore both cost & DIY and just consider ready made lights, what wattage should I be looking for? I've considered 300w panels like Galaxyhydro or Viperspectra. But then I read about 50w COB's like Optic 1 or Spider. Maybe 1 or 2 of these COB's?

A lot of people are going to hop on this thread and go 'NO BLURPLE' and I get it.

But they are going to suggest you save for a better light and or make you're own. They will ignore your request to ignore all that. Seen it way too many times.

Look man I'm sure you did all the research and know cons are better for growing as more than a hobby because they last and are kinda cheap to make.

HPS, again gr at but create heat in small spaces if not well vented.

Les comes in many shapes and forms, but you're looking at "full spectrum " meaning the blurble ones and that's fine but you have to know the true wattage of those lights. If you're only doing one or two I'd get one, But I'm a 600-800w so the true wattage should be around 3-400w and more than enough for a single plant.

I use my blurple and it does me wonders. Yeah I have a room with gap as well and they do okay, honestly I like how the nugs turn out from the purple light but that's just me liking rocks for nugs.

Lighting seems to be preferable taste more than what's better these days: I can get an les light in the same watts as a hps or t8 and I find I still get better results with my led. Most will say different but most don't grow like me ;) lololol

What you need to know is those lights don’t actually draw 300 Watts, it’s a gimmick. I started with galaxyhydro lights ( very impressive during veg, fell short flowering) pics somewhere on RIU. It’s old technology and it’s the cheapest way to go. Quantum boards and cobs are a great choice and you won’t be deceived . Check out Timber , Hlg, and as you mentioned fluence bioengineering.

I’d avoid those blurples if possible or find yourself purchasing lights again in the near future.

Good luck

The reason we come and suggest a better light is because we've experienced both sides. Yes, I’m going to suggest avoiding those lights because new tech offers PPF over 1178 umol, and the the flowering footprints are amazing. Now they’re even using top-bin Samsung diodes. How could we possibly suggest a blurple after they’ve unleashed the beasts....... lol :)

Sorry to hop on the post but would you recommend a 100W COB in a 60x60x160 tent?

TIA

I’d have to recommend you ask @RainDan, @Stephenj37826 ,or @CobKits . I don’t want to give you any wrong info and those guys basically know everything.

I’m still learning ( stalking them lol) I thought that 100watts would only veg a 2x2 but as I said I’m still learning so I can’t answer yet. :)

Haha okay no worries.

I kinda just want the one light that does every stage. But yeah I’m just going to have to hop on all posts and nick the info

Thanks

Below, listed from lowest cost to highest cost. They are prebuilt lights for a 2x2 space. All will work great for a full run and have a very full spectrum. Choose 3000k or 3500k and you should be very happy.

@the op (just noticed I answered someone else's question. For such a short space really only consider things like quantum boards or f series strips. Mostly because your height is severely limited with little horizontal growing space. The hanging distance of other lights will steal a lot more height from your tent.

I like the fact your using a four dimensional tent! :bigjoint:
Seriously though, 40cm x 40cm , you really only need 50w of good white LED or about 75w of blurple. I would avoid the blurple personally, the less watts you use the less heat.
You could just buy like 60w of plug in household LEDs if you wanted.
If it were me I would be getting the most efficient light I could so I could get the most out of that space for the least wattage.

I have the same kind of space, more or less. 50x50x100.

According to Timbergrowlights my perfect wattage with COBs is 103w and thats what I got, however heat is an issue that has to be dealt with.

I use 7 cobs driven at 15w each to get it closer to canopy with the restrictions. Plants seem to like it, but I have other problems.

If I was going to buy something today I would without a doubt get the 135w QB posted. Even if its expensive they seem great quality, getting a good spread and most important to me (and you) it has a dimmable driver which means you can lower the output to 80-90w to be able to work with your height limitation.

Wow, lots of suggestions. Many thanks! Time for more research. Corey, I always use 4-dimensions in a small space, exponentially more room to grow bongsmilie.

The HLG 135 QB board looks good for my space constraints. I'll investigate the cost delivered to Australia. This vs the Optic 1 (locally available) seems to be the bottleneck now. Price is not my first priority, but at some point dollar per gram comes into play and I'm only growing 1x plant...

Until you calculate cost per gram over the life of the light.

$200 over 10 years is quite nominal. Cost for one cycle is quite high for the light fixture. But each run cuts the cost light fixture cost. (10 years of single plant grows could be you know 30-45 cycles) $200 ÷ 30 = $6.67 | light fixture cost each cycle. Lower power consumption on electricity bills during that time too. And no bulb change needed.

Just chiming in with another recommendation for the hlg qb. It fits your needs pretty perfectly. It's not significantly more expensive than the cheapy outdated lights the hid crowd is still upset over. If you get the kit, stupid easy to wire together. Grand total of five connections you need to make and it's all color coded.

in that short of a space i would probably get the smaller one, since they are non-dimmable.

optic 1 is a great light too and at $160 is a good deal. but i think the qb might be better to get light spread with your height restrictions.
That HLG 65 is underpowered. I have one in my 35x35x50cm tent and it's a slow veg light and I'm sure it'll be even worse at flowering. Unless I keep my plants REALLY close they'll stretch out and the growth is spindly. Previous rounds were with 5x 20w E27 LED spots and I had a lot better results. I honestly miss my old 70w Micro Hans Panel, it did a lot better job at growing weed than quantums. I have HLG40 veg lights for my cactuses and other succulents (8 of them in use) and they're really bad compared to T5.

OP, get E27 LED bulbs, they'll be cheaper than quantums and it's easy to cover the 40x40 area. Also, 120cm is plenty of height, don't worry about it.

I just don't get it, the quantums are supposed to be THE SHIT, but the results I'm getting with them are really crappy. Is it just that I'm used to a lot higher wattages? I used to run 2 x 315w CMHs. Am I expecting too much out of them?

So the largest light you own is a single HLG 65? And you had stretch with a 4000k qb in a 14 inch wide area that's 20 inches tall? I think my mailbox is larger than your grow space, n wtf were you growing in, a petri dish?

Look, I know it's tempting, but stop snorting your bennies.

Small plant pic = currently @ 110 watts from the wall of QB132's @ 2700k in a 2x4x7 tent.
Larger plant pic = 160/180 watts from the wall, same qbs, plus some minimal side lighting - 6 weeks into the 12/12.

I was told the HLG65 would be able to flower in a micro grow situation (35x35x50), which it obviously can't do. It's also not a decent veg light, even in that small space. At the moment I can only grow for my own consumption and the 60 grams I can fit in that space is enough.

I used to grow in a 3x4 tent and 31" x 20" cabinet, the tent had two 315 CMHs and the cabinet had two 90w Hans panels. I've done multiple micro grows in really small spaces, smallest being 8" x 8".

So the problem with my experiences with QBs is that there aren't enough watts? Maybe I'll reconsider QBs after I can go back to larger tents.

It -can- flower that space, but not incredibly, that's why it's marketed as a low cost, high efficiency early veg light. The hlg 100 at 4000k with a hanging height of 22-25cm is more like what I would have said to go with flower a 35×35 cm tent for that projected yeild with slightly increased quality and turn around time. But that's just my own mental math.

What height were you hanging the 65 at, I'm curious.
