Switching LED lights the first week of grow, am I safe or too late?

Is it safe to switch the LED's from Mars Hydro to Optic 1 XL, one week after sprouting?

Hey all, new member here. Been growing for a a few years now and finally thought it was time to sign up for a forum and ask some questions I've had..

I'm a week into growing my Cinderella 99 and she sprouted last Saturday. I switched to LED's two grows ago and have liked the results, with the heat and electricity going down it was a nice change. The yield was definitely lower compared to my old HPS/MH setup though :(

I'm using a Mars Hydro 720w Reflector series in a 2x4x7 tent. I thought this was the light to get for great results, but after getting my last harvest, the yield was low again and the only thing I can tie that to, would be switching to LED's. I used to get about 300 grams a harvest from my 400watt MH/HPS. Now I'm only getting about 200-220 grams a grow from the 720watt, which really only pulls in about 290watts. When I first researched LED's it was very easy to get distracted by the numbers they claim the lights put out. When you first dive into the LED world and read 720watts you think, wow that's a lot, but its not really even close to that, or at least that's what I am finding. So now I am looking at real LED companies. I think I'm going to go with the "Optic 1 Xl" LED light . I would post a link, but I'm too new of a member :D It's true color, not burple. I think 2 of them would be really good in my 2x4x7 tent. Does anyone have experience with this light? Looks very promising.

Now that you have some background, my question is- Am I safe to switch to the Optic 1 XL after the plants have been growing under the Mars Hydro burple light for a week? I'm worried, because when I first got the Mars Hydro, I used it to flower my plants that had already been vegged under a 400watt MH, and I believe the plants became very stunted from this change, as there was little growth after I switched to LED's.

So sorry for the lengthy post and thank you for any help!!

The problem is the actual coverage of photons on the canopy area. If you are into DIY there are several mid power options. Best investment you can make is on your lights.

For the 2x4 space I'd recommend 260-320 watts of high efficiency white led. Like quantum boards or strips

Buy some quality leds..
Is Optic Grow LED lights not reputable? Just curious, I'm looking into the brands you sent me now, thanks for the suggestions!

I'm definitely learning that now, lights are super important, obvious, but still! I'm not too into the DIY method, and for some reason the omega light scares me a little ha! And I agree with the white led, it seems more natural than the "burple" type LED's. Thanks for the input!

I'm going to personally buy about 1100 watts from him soon myself. They are on solid aluminum heatsink and are much less fragile than you think.

Mars are not terribly efficient LED's - so yeah, light is probably the problem.
Thank you! That's exactly what I'm thinking. And I know LUX are not the same as PAR, but I bought a LUX meter because they are a LOT cheaper than a real PAR meter. The LUX results from the Mars Hydro really fell short.

So I'm looking at the Omega lighting now and the one you posted might be a good fit for me. I just can't find too much about them and I definitely would like to see some videos and pics of the lights on. Do you have any links/videos on them? The whole open concept makes me a little worried too, electrical/fire issues. I'm sure it's fine, but still a little different from what I'm used to.

The fixture he builds are DIY based but appear to be very functional. I'd be happier if the line connections on the power supplies were shielded but overall, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. Very good value.

Good comparison purely on efficiency

optic 1 rates very well (don`t know about optic 1 xl)

If he had tested HLG 288V2 it probably would be 1st

Hey everyone, thank you for the help! I'm still doing a good amount of research on which light I'm getting. My original question remains the same though; Will it be safe switching to a white type LED from a blurple type LED one week after sprouting?

Yes, plants will love it. If you get a highly efficient light like optic 1 or HLG quantum board etc, keep them up high until plant gets used to them. Turn down dimmer if light has that option.

Yes, the plant will do fine, as long as you don't blast it with the light really close. Start it off with the light a fair distance - at least a couple of feet.

You switched to leds and the lower light made you think they were cooler than hps.

Buy 400watts of the top led and probably come close to hps.

My advice is just switch back to the hps and work out the rest, 300g of 400whps is quite respectable in a short veg grow.

Yeah the 400 hps/mh setup was fun, but it became costly with the monthly electric (my electric bill became realistic again switching to LED's), the tent was always hot, so I had to have cooling/inline fans and then the ducting for the light and all that good stuff. I just really don't want to go back to that, it was a hassle for me personally.

Well everyone, after a good amount of searching I keep coming back the Optic 1 XL. Thank you all for the reassurance of switching from blurple type spectrum to the Optic XL, I didn't think it would affect them too much this early into the grow, but never hurts to get others opinions! Have a good one!! bongsmiliebongsmilie:grin::grin::grin:

I have a timber cob light in my 3x3 and love it. The biggest challenge you’re going to have using the optic 1XL in your 2x4 is light distribution and uniformity. I think the perfect option for lighting up the 2x4 tent is a quantum board kit from HLG like this one 34D5440D-D81F-483A-88D0-638DFC227A4E.pngThe optic one is a good light just not the best option for a 2x4. More light sources = better uniformity with less hotspots.

My mistake I should of mentioned in earlier post, I plan on getting (2) of the Optic 1 XL. They say one is good for a 2x2 flower, so I thought (2) of them would be perfect for the 4x2 veg/flower tent.

I hope you are getting a deal on them because $500 usd can buy a whole lot of light in the diy community, best of luck however you decide to go.

Agreed. If trying to dabble in the led game. It's not like other lighting options where any brand will produce for the most part similar results. Led is not the case. Seriously, and led that really gives reasonable results will have a heavy price tag. You have 3 groups of led. Top of the line true full spectrum cobs or quantums or Samsung boards. Next level down you have your mid end blurples. Mars hydro, viparspectra etc. Then lastly you have the Chinese random name brand led that always claim full spectrum and good growth but the light is literally a hundred bucks for 3x3 coverage. Yeah too good to be true. Untill leds are more consistent and price comes down. I'll stick to my 200 dollar cmh fixtures

My site has only been online for about a month now so there's not a lot of them out there yet, but I've been using them for a while now.. Here is my current grow, started under a 6 strip light at 100-150 watts:

And here is the Strip light I have been using for flowering since last summer:

Its made with Samsung Acuity strips, which are not as efficient as the F series. Here are a some grows with them:
