Is this a good carbon scrubber?

Well ya but really what is a scrubber? It’s a can with holes in it that allow the air to travel over the charcoal, I agree that it’s not pretty and has a shit load of something in it lol. But I would try it, but I’m cheap as chips too lol.
The thing is with all the open air space you might as well just fill it styrofoam packing popcorn or marbles. They're designed to be packed tight with activated charcoal so the air is filtered through it. Those packets will do absolutely nothing. The air will travel through without any filtration at all finding the path of least resistance which is the entire metal shell at this point.

At the very least dump those packets out and fill it with something like this https://www.amazon.com/Aquapapa-Activated-Charcoal-Pellets-Aquarium/dp/B01GFOORYE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1536012175&sr=8-4&keywords=activated+charcoal+for+filter

Or just buy a decent filter. They are not that expensive. If you're trying to cover up smell you have to use something that's going to work.

I think that’s what he meant. Is they need to be poured in however without the ability to pack it in tight they don’t work right.

I know. The first carbon filter I had was a DIY. It was a mess and I couldn't get the carbon packed anywhere near tight enough. Now I just buy a new one about once a year.

Got this plus a reflector along with the filter for $50
Craigslist? How many watts? Have you plugged the ballast and light in to make sure everything works? And how many hours on the lights? The filter is worthless without properly having carbon packed into it.

This filter i got for free when i bought a lot of growing supplies. Yea it has the white prefilter i just took it off so y'all could see the inside of the filter. And it looks like its filled with a bunch of silcon packets or something lol and the outlet was a ceiling light that i took off and am looking to turn that into the exit for the hot air.
That filter has been robbed of the carbon that goes in it.

I buy carbon bulk of the internet and refill my filters.

Just Google bulk coconut carbon for air and it will pop up several onlinenhydro shops selling it.

How do you get it packed in tight. My experience hasn't been good. But that was with a DIY filter. Never tried refilling a factory built shell.

Don't bother hooking up that filter the way it is. Either fill it properly with packed carbon or buy a new one. But if you're in a legal state, or space between neighbors, etc... That might not even be an issue. It is a fact though that the way that filter sits it won't filter anything.

I live in a legal state nearest person to me is maybe 7-10 acres. I use the filters for courtesy sake. Plus I’d rather not have everyone know I grow unless I tell them lol.

I’m the same but I’ve kind of got a bit cranky and said fuck the smell, my filter has been removed lol. My outdoor plants are quite well hidden so their not a concern. My closest neibour is 75’ away till the end of September (cottage) then I’m all alone :)

I refill mine all the time. Several different sizes. It works great. Even had it put to the test by police being near the exhaust.

Living in Denver, I follow all the busts that make the news closely. 9 out of 10 times someone complained about smell.

I run the big can filter (water heater size). It is packed so tight you really can’t see anything at all through the holes. There is a 10” max fan running it and I would guess the whole thing probably cost me $900. I replace the prefilter every 6 mo this or so but still replace the filter every two years. This is in a 8 light room with 4 tables in it.

I also have a small filter I run during week 9.

For real, in the grand scheme of things the filter is a place you want to make sure is perfect. Trust me spending years away from your family over bullshit is no fun. And neither is cutting down your babies cause the 5.0 is in your basement.
